Borat Subsequent Moviefilm 6.7/10 (Amazon Prime)

Some opening scenes were a little gross and might have been better after a slow warmup or as a cinema experience. Damn you Covid. I watched it to the end and thought it was pretty funny, although cringeworthy in places. Removed a couple of decimals for cringe factor. I'll leave the last words to Judith Dim Evans who appeared in the film:

Judith Dim Evans: I really think the world has made big progress, if we think of where were were 500 years ago, 100 years ago or 50 years ago. People are much more open and talk much more to each other. If people don’t go out to vote, they hurt. We have that voice in this world and we have to make our voice heard and feel it’s important enough for our voice to be heard. Words have consequences, not only deeds. Words have consequences and we’re using words too easily. Words are powerful. We think only physical acts are powerful. In today’s society, in America, I think we are using words too loosely.

I recently watched I, Tonya (Netflix) which is about Tonya Harding, USAian Olympic figure skater involved in 'the incident'.

It's a dramatised biopic with Margot Robbie playing Tonya Harding. She's not the doe-eyed innocent she played in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood but rather a talented youngster growing up on the wrong side of the tracks, with all the challenges that brings with it.

Robbie does a great job, the sets and costumes from the 80s are excellent and the cast of characters are so outlandish they seem made up, but there's a few moments of real footage during the credits where we see at least some of the people involved in the story were actually like that.

'The incident' is covered and is obviously what brought her story to the public eye. I wouldn't describe 'the incident' as an afterthought of the movie but after learning about her upbringing, what she'd been through as a skater and who she was surrounded by, 'the incident' seems inevitable. If you already know anything about her, you will re-evaluate what you think about her after watching her story.

Thoroughly recommended, 9/10

Wonder Woman 84 - 6/10

With so many similar reviews there's little point in spending too much energy writing a review for this.  I thought it was okay, but not as good as the first film.  A few little things bothered me.  For instance, when Barbara says she wants to be an apex predator, why does the Wish interpret this as "turn her into a cheetah?"  Maybe there's some in-comic reason for Barbara Minerva as Cheetah, but in the movie it seemed unexplained (or maybe I just dozed off during that bit).  And also (spolier alert), why does the Wish interpret Diana's wish for Steve Trevor as "download his essence into random guy" rather than just "resurrect his corpse."  Picky things, I know, but I think that's symptomatic of a slightly dull film - little things occupy your mind, rather than the story.

As a fan of most things 80s, I was looking forward to the setting but it didn't really shine through.  In fact, the best thing about this film for me was actually released months ago in the trailer - Sebastian Bohm's incredible cover of New Order's Blue Monday.  I've had this track in my playlist ever since, and it still gives me goosebumps.

The Last Seduction 1994 8/10 DVD

Thriller starring Linda Fiorentino as a femme fatale manipulating her male partners including Bill Pullman with ease but with fatal consequences. Good atmosphere and Fiorentino is perfectly cast and gives an outstanding performance.

Reminds me of Jessica Chastain in Miss Sloane, a movie I would definitely recommend. The story is completely different but Chastain embodies the same strong characteristics as Fiorentino. Instead of employing methods that are illegal though she uses her abilities as a lawyer to defeat her male opponents.

Shaun of the Dead (2004) - Netflix. 8/10

I maintain this is the best zombie comedy and still stands as a fairly non-problematic banger of a good time.

Shaun of the Dead is absolutely one of those movies you can watch multiple times, and discover something new, and very funny, every time.

I watched an interesting series last week.  'Years and Years'.  It's pretty topical what with the goings on in America right now.  It starts with Donald Trump, who has won re-election and is into his second term, has a nuclear stand off with China over what they call Hong Sha Dao, which has to be based on the Chinese man made island on Fiery Cross Reef  It's not really a spoiler to tell you that the nuke is launched, the siland turned to dust, and 40,000 Chinese military types are killed.

Surprisingly, there is nothing about retaliation, but the world goes to poo.  The story then revolves about one family's struggle to deal with it all.  There's a nice Geek angle with one of the characters coming out as Trans.  I think I'll leave you to find out the punch line because that would be a spoiler.

There's some fairly explicit gay sex scenes in the early episodes.

Well worth a watch — IMDB gives 8.3 — and has some amusing political angles, like Mike Pence becomes President after Trump's second term, but Trump is still the power behind the throne.  Rather like Putin and Dmitry Medvedev

And Justice For All 1979 5/10 DVD

An early Al Pacino effort that IMO hasn't really aged well. Norman Jewison directs a story about the corrupt US judicIal system but it feels heavy handed and the whole film is a bit 'shouty'.

Pacino's performance is pretty reasonable though and his final courtroom speech is very eloquent.

A Man For All Seasons 1966 7/10 DVD

The story of the final years of Sir Thomas Moore under the reign of Henry VIII is very atmospheric with a good performance from Paul Schofield in the title role and an excellent Henry VIII from Robert Shaw.

Nickelodeon 1976 6/10 DVD

Peter Bogdanovitch, Ryan O'Neil and Tatum O'Neil join forces with Burt Reynolds in a sort of comedy about the early years of silent movies which only occasionally works. The first part is frenetic like an early silent film while the second half is more measured and all the better for it. A few one liners are worth a chuckle.

Burt Reynolds was actually a pretty good comic actor.

The O'Neils and Bogdanovich made a much better effort in Paper Moon - well worth a watch.

afe66: The Dry 9/10.

Slow burner crime mystery based on the book by Jane Harper about a policeman returning to his claustrophobic small home town in outback Australia for the funeral of a school friend who has died died after apparently killing his family and himself.

Main character left town as a teenager under a cloud and town hasn't forgotten/forgiven him so there's two stories being told in parallel.

I like Eric Bana as an actor and I'd watch him in anything. I've read the book which explains some more about the back story of character but you don't need read the book.

Might see it again at some stage in future too.

Pretty much does what it says on the can. Slow burning atmospheric drama with the ever reliable Eric Bana in the lead. 8/10

From the ridiculous to the sublime...

Justice League - 2/10

I rewatched this after reading about the Snyder Cut due out soon.  I began to wonder in my head "was it as bad as I remember it?"

Yes.  Yes it was.

Whatever you might think of Marvel films, they manage to make even the least interesting of their films "fun."  For instance, the Ant Man films didn't impress me much, but there is still a kernel of enjoyment to be had there.  Even Thor: The Dark World is watchable, and has some fun moments.  But Justice League really just feels like a slog to get through.  Only Gal Gadot and Jason Momoa salvage anything from this hot mess, and its evident in that their standalone films are significantly more "fun" and enjoyable.  Being the masochist that I am, I may end up watching the Snyder Cut, but that's only because I'm a completist, and I'm curious to see how it would be different to the Snyder/Whedon version.

Get Out - 9.5/10

This may be one of the best films I've seen in years.  I used to enjoy horror films (I remember being impressed by Saw, even a couple of the sequels), but since becoming a dad (not sure if that's causal or coincidence) I don't feel drawn to watch the more gory horror films that are being released.  But Get Out is fantastic because it plays more on the sinister/creepy vibe, rather than the hack n slash horror tropes.  I missed it when it was released (coinciding with the arrival of my second daughter), and have only just now got round to watching it.  All the more remarkable, I was able to watch it in a single sitting, managing to avoid being interrupted.  I can't remember the last time I was able to watch an entire movie in a single evening.

I knew before I started that this film was very well received, and had an inkling about the story.  But I was blown away by the tautness of the story, the quality of the acting, and the masterful way that Jordan Peele builds up the creepiness.  As the audience you know instinctively that the white people are sinister, and while there is a puzzle/twist to watch for the movie doesn't make that puzzle the centrepiece at the expense of other aspects of the film.  You get to admire the way Daniel Kalyuua portrays Chris' unease with the awkward racial virtue signalling by his girlfriend's parents, and the subtle acting by Allison Williams as Rose, his girlfriend.  Bradley Whitford and Catherine Keener round out the main cast perfectly.

For a debut director this is a home run.  I see he's directed just one other feauture film, Us.  I'm off to track it down right away.

Kelly's Heroes 1970 - Netflix - 7/10. Great romp of a war movie. One of my 'up there' movies. Apart from Clint Eastwood, I think all the other actors are dead now.

Whilst the difficult we can do immediately, the impossible takes a bit longer. However, miracles you will have to wait for.

Hush Hush Sweet Charlotte 1964 7/10 DVD

Bette Davis doing what she did best as an aging southern belle living in a grand mansion believing that her father had murdered her married lover years before. Very atmospheric and if you like Bette Davis movies not to be missed.

Directed by Robert Aldrich.
