Last night I did a routine firmware update on my router, and lost my Internet connection. Rebooted everything (ONT, router, PC) and couldn't connect to anything, with the router reporting "limited connectivity". I waited half an hour and tried again, no luck. I normally use DHCP but I tried PPPoE and that made it work again.

The really strange thing, however, is that this morning I tried DHCP again and it's working fine!

I'd wonder if the flash actually failed.

The DHCP session might be long, and the ISP won't hand out another connection until the current one expires. Using PPPoE means an immediate new connection each time the router is logged in.

I get this on quic with DHCP whenever updating. It just dies and will not come back till I either unplug and replug the ethernet or reboot the unifi gateway.

Seems absurd that it cant re-lease the same IP to the same device on the same connection but I don't really know how the ISP side works to know why this would happen.

I'm on Quic too. The strange thing is that I waited half an hour or more and it didn't help, but it worked the following morning.

It is a bit odd. you change the WAN type, the router simply stops running a DHCP client.

It does not send a DHCPRELEASE unless the firmware explicitly does so. Most consumer routers don't when rebooting or when you change WAN mode.

From the ISP’s perspective, your device just disappeared.

But in the time you fixed it, the DHCP lease may have expired. But then again, some ISPs maintain separate state besides the DHCP lease.

Note the ISP chooses the expiration length.

There could be several reasons, including the router rebooted with a different WAN identifier confusing the ISP, the ISP's DHCP infrastructure had a stale session or binding that timed out.

But honestly, who knows? Without packet captures, it's just guessing.

That's why network engineers get paid the big bucks. (At least I think they're still paid big bucks)

Not all routers, and not all are bug free. I had a strange problem with my Synology, where changing from DHCP to PPPoE did not terminate the DHCP client, causing IPv6 issues. A factory reset and reloading a configuration backup fixed it.

So, do not discount bugs in the firmware.

Interesting. Mine's a Synology as well, and I found when using PPPoE that the router claimed to have an IPv6 connection, but it didn't "flow" through to my clients. I wonder whether it was the same sort of issue (since changing back to DHCP it's been working again).

And you have IPv6 enabled on each individual network?

I have (what was) a fairly high end router- Asus GT-AX11000.

Whenever I reboot (usually only for firmware updates) it seldom picks up a connection each time. Usually rebooting the ONT first works, but it can take several goes.

I suspect if I left it long enough it would connect- whenever we have had a power cut over night it seems to be connected in the morning.

Edit On Spark network max plan.

It's got me wondering whether this was the same issue, and whether the only reason it "felt" different was a matter of timing.
