Hush Hush Sweet Charlotte 1964 7/10 DVD

Bette Davis doing what she did best as an aging southern belle living in a grand mansion believing that her father had murdered her married lover years before. Very atmospheric and if you like Bette Davis movies not to be missed.

Directed by Robert Aldrich.

I gave it a 7/10 too. Very atmospheric.

Monster Hunter. Saw it at the movies as had a cheap ticket and a couple of offers, so made it a reasonable night out.

I thoroughly enjoyed it. I went in, switched off my brain and relaxed in the reclining leather chair at Hoyts. I ate popcorn, had an icecream and drank a large softdrink.

It was loud and shouty and blow-uppy and shooty and fun.

I'd give it a solid 8/10 for a mindless action flick.

3/10 for it's cerebral content.

5/10 for dialogue.

10/10 for monsters.

Se7en 7.5/10 DVD

Brad Pitt and Morgan Freeman in a serial killer story with some truly bizarre murders. Hadn't watched this for a while and IMO it's still a good watch although the ending now feels very contrived.

Outside the Wire on Netflix. 8/10

Set in the near future the US has a peace keeping force deployed in the the Ukraine. It is a war where robots are fighting as solders along side human troops.
A drone pilot ends up assigned to the local US ground forces to work with a high tech Android to track down a terrorist.

Solid story ( for an action movie) with good action scenes and believable science.
They threw in a bit of overt moral messaging but I still really enjoyed the movie

If you ever watched and enjoyed District 9 you will enjoy this.

Indiana Jones and Raiders of the Lost Ark.

Still as good as ever. Even for a 40yr old movie! Reading Cinemas has the Indiana Jones series playing over the next weekends. Mr11 had been asking to see it. Was a bit dubious about showing him it because of the ending. But then saw it was gonna be on in the cinema and couldn't resist missing that opportunity. Am surprised it holds a PG rating tbh (probably showing my age these days). He loved it too so 🤷‍♂️👍 I guess.

Jackie Brown - 7/10

I've seen most of Quentin Tarantino's feature films (Hateful Eight is the exception now), and for the most part I really enjoy them. Reservoir Dogs, Pulp Fiction, and Kill Bill (vol. 1 and 2) are excellent, Django Unchained is really good, Inglourious Basterds and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood are more meh. So I sat down to watch the movie that QT directed after Pulp Fiction.

It was okay - better than Django Unchained but not as good as Pulp Fiction. Samuel L Jackson is there as one of QT's perennials, and he's great - though his hair in this film is incredibly distracting. Robert de Niro turns up, which I wasn't expecting, and he gives an unnerving performance. Pam Grier as the titular character is excellent. The usual QT hallmarks are present - the style of dialogue, the emphasis on food and feet, etc. It would have been interesting to watch this film contemporaneously, because I think a lot of the things I noticed, which were distracting, were only so because QT has established these things as his trademarks over his subsequent films. If I had watched it back in the 90s, it may not have been as noticeable.

The Cold Light of Day - on TV.

Action thriller starring Henry Cavill and Bruce Willis.

Basically a Wall Street type goes to Spain to vacation with his Parents and brother (and brother's girlfriend?) on the family yacht.

He gets off the yacht and when he returns all is not well with the world.

Spy thriller ensues and he is caught between Mossad and the CIA with rather cliché inept Spanish police thrown in.

Good pace, plenty going on and a somewhat predictable plot with the odd twist.

7/10 from me

Personally I like Inglorious Basterds and am reserving judgement on Once Upon A Time In Hollywood until I've watched it a few more times.

Jackie Brown is more like his earlier, less grand works such as Reservoir Dogs, but a very good watch nonetheless.

As you say Pam Grier is great and De Niro makes an excellent seedy low-life.

The thing about Tarrantino is that if someone says 'let's watch a Tarrantino film' you don't really mind which one it is. You can't say that about many directors.

Shadow in the Cloud. 3/10

I wanted to like it, but it's just terrible. Chloe did a great job in the lead role but everything else was just dreadful. Sorry, I wanted so much more from a NZ made film.

Lazy is such an ugly word, I prefer to call it selective participation
