It really feels like on the whole, there are less movies that are really fantastic over the past few years.  I can't recall the last time I thought a movie was good enough to buy.  I don't love old movies that much, and recently action thrillers just seem very meh, no cool plots, or plot twists.

They've definitely settled into a few basic types e.g. the hyper-stylised slightly fantasy types such as John Wick

There's the occasional highlight such as Den Of Thieves. Also enjoyed Baby Driver and the XXX has fallen series.

Take your brain out and enjoy the ride.

The movie industry has changed a lot over 10 years. The mid budget movie is largely gone now. You have the choice between an IP movie (Marvel etc) or something quite low budget.

I must say, the ultra-violent, super-stylised, game-like movies such as John Wick are certainly becoming more common - it's just a matter of budget these days, as to whether they end up being great or just OK.

That feels like an accurate summation actually. I have yet to see a Netflix or Amazon Original film that has the production quality of a hollywood traditional film studio and often I find that is very distracting.

I'm going to have a crack at the Sorkin film shortly.

I really enjoyed 6 underground.  It was just a fun action packed movie, that at times just had me grinning.

You must be watching the wrong movies. Something like the Irishman is as well made as anything Hollywood had ever produced. A $250 million budget in the hands of Scorcese will do that.

Many of the movies made for streaming are produced by the traditional production companies and purchased after completion. The biggest difference is that a "sticky" or cult movie is far more valuable to a streaming service than a broadly popular but forgettable movie. If they are your cup of tea then the future isn't that bright.

I just watched that. It was absolutely terrible. Vaguely entertaining if you wanted to completely disengage your brain but absolutely terrible.

Typical Michael Bay I guess. Lots of explosions, some soft pron and American flags.

The Eight Hundred  (Chinese with Subtitles ) 2Hr 27min
https://www.justwatch.com/nz/movie/the-eight-hundred

""
In 1937, eight hundred Chinese soldiers fight under siege from a warehouse in the middle of the Shanghai battlefield, completely surrounded by the Japanese army.
""

On one side across a canal was the International Settlement, mainly administered by British, though USA and other nations part of enclave.
Untouched by Japan at that time. So this tragedy played out in full view. Goodyear blimps even used as observing points.
Contrast to lights, bars, gambling on one side and the utter destruction of the rest of the city around them.

Some historical background.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Shanghai

""
However, because the Nine Power Treaty Conference was to begin in early November, Chiang Kai-shek ordered his troops to stay in the Shanghai battlefield, instead of retreating to the Wufu and Xicheng Lines to protect Nanjing. He also left one lone battalion to defend the Sihang Warehouse in metropolitan Shanghai. Chiang also visited the frontlines to encourage his troops.

Because Shanghai was the most important Chinese city in Western eyes, the troops had to fight and hold on to the city as long as possible, rather than moving toward the defense lines along nameless towns en route to Nanjing. On November 3, the Conference finally convened in Brussels. While the Western powers were in session to mediate the situation, the Chinese troops were making their final stand in Shanghai and had all hopes for a Western intervention that would save China from collapse.
""
In the end, Shanghai fell, and China lost a significant portion of its best troops, while failing to elicit any international intervention.
""

Fair warning its brutal, the film does not shy away from this.

There is also some intrigue around its release.
It was expected to have a good chance of picking up a number of awards at its planned festival release.
Main combatants on Chinese side were the Nationalist Army, with Nationalist badges and flag visible.
Once CCP party officials realized how this looked ( though historically accurate ), they raced out to kill its release and participation in the festival.
No idea if this has had cuts made, to finally get released a year and half later.

I would recommend for history buff, at this time Spanish Civil War was underway with German units participating.
Also Stalin's great purges in Soviet Union, in a few months Italy withdraws from League of Nations, invasion of Poland 2 years to come.

David Byrne's American Utopia.

Suffice to say I was an idiot.

I could have seen the live show, but nah - I expected it to be a mix of Byrne's eclectic newer material and covers of Talking Heads material that wouldn't match the real thing, In general I'm no fan of seeing old rockers/bands still touring  - so gave it a pass.

So, I started watching the movie with a bit of a lacklustre attitude / low expectations...  and oh - how wrong I was.

This concert movie is absolutely sensational.  Maybe it's better than the "real thing", something I'll never know because I was an idiot and missed it. TH covers "updated" 40 years with the funky beat that was probably always there - unleashed, superb musicians, choreography, dance, well recorded audio, outstanding filmmaking by Spike Lee.

Olympus Has Fallen - 6/10 (Netflix)

I was looking for an entertaining action flick on Saturday, and decided to give the "... Has Fallen" series a go.  Gerard Butler as an ex-Secret Service agent who (arguably) screws up a protection detail and gets benched, only to be drawn into an incursion on the White House.  That side of it was interesting in light of the events back at the start of January at the US Capitol, but for the most part it was kind of a low-rent rip off of Die Hard - kind of Die Hard at the White House.  But Gerard Butler lacked the charisma of Bruce Willis in a white singlet, or the desperation of someone who is fighting to save his family.  The villain, Rick Yune, was similarly thin.

Can best be summed up in two words.  Dumb. Fun.  But emphasis on the first over the second.  May check out London Has Fallen when I need to check my brain out for a couple of hours.

All 37 of the "...Has Fallen" franchise are basically the same. Much like Die Hard or The Expendables etc. Good action flicks with little to think about.

I enjoy them.

After rewatching the Alien movies, now available on Disney+ I can say "After three movies, why dafuq don't people raise questions when there's an android riding with them?"

Also, any movie in the series "Lost spaceship, android, hard landing, xenomorph, lots of dead, the end"
