SJB:

Vanishing Point DVD 8/10

Cult 1971 car chase movie with Barry Newman as the loner standing up to authority driving the real star of the film, a Dodge Challenger 440 R/T, across the wide open expanses of the mid-west.

Forget Fast and Furious - this is the real deal.

Saw it as a kid, was fascinated by it. Revisit it every few years.

I enjoy a good 70s movie. It was the second golden age of Hollywood, my wife always tells me when we watch a 70s movie 😃

Unfortunately I see this one isn't on the streaming services, and so I still haven't seen it. Mrs Penguino subscribes to Alice Dvd service so I should ask her to put it on her list.

But, to contribute to the thread, I recently watched another 70s classic, Deliverance.
Whoa, that's some crazy shit in that plot. 7.5 /10
It's on one of the streaming services, neon I think

Most of the posters in this thread are just like chimpanzees on MDMA, full of feelings of bonhomie, joy, and optimism. Fred99 8/4/21

Vanishing Point is one of those movies that hits you hard and stays with you.  There are some parallels to Easy Rider — especially the ending.  I saw Easy Rider in the cinema and the movie is winding up to the end and you are thinking about gathering up your stuff and BAM!!!  I didn't see that coming.  At least with Vanishing Point you get a few seconds to get used to the inevitable Authority stamping down on freedom ending.   The shock, lull you into a sense of all the bad stuff is over, and then hit you in the face ending was a bit of a thing back then.  Carrie's bloody hand coming out of the ground.  Friday the 13th where a lone survivor drifts peacefully in a boat on the lake and the totally killed Jason comes out of the water and grabs her. Freddy Kruger's hand punches through the front door and pulls the woman through the door.   Not exactly  a jumpscare, but one I absolutely didn't see coming so was left with a serious case of the collywobbles was Sixth Sense (I see dead people) when it finally becomes clear that Bruce Willis has been one of those dead people throughout the movie.

Mortal Kombat (2021) - story was meh but efftects and fights were pretty good altho lacking in detail (ie: someone gets cut with a sword but you don't see any injuries on them).

If they got a decent writer, it'll good.

6/10

The funny thing is that when I was at boarding school in the 70s the boarding house got a movie out every Saturday night. The powers that be didn't seem to vet our choices. No one seemed to worry about R certificates. We saw Easy Rider, Vanishing Point, the English drama Scum (Ray Winstone's first movie that helped get rid of borstals), and many other R rated classics.

That final scene in VP does stick with ya though.

King of Staten Island. Comedy. Judd Apatow does an optimistic American family values movie with lots of dope smoking as usual and not suitable for children. Slow start turns into very funny movie with some undefined ends.

Believe Me: The Abduction of Lisa McVey

Netflix 7/10.  Easy to follow, single-thread plot.  Just the right length.  I probably wouldn't have watched it if it wasn't based on a true story, but that is what makes it quite remarkable.  I've taken a couple of points off because the behaviour of the main character is just too sober and rational at times for a 17 year-old who has just been through a horrific ordeal.

Sometimes I use big words I don't always fully understand in an effort to make myself sound more photosynthesis.

The Alligator People (1959) on Disney+ Star

Quite terrible.

Really enjoyed it.

Cheesy and low budget. Dreadfully acted. I'm keen to see more of these.

Grosse Pointe Blank (1997)

Saw it in the 90's, rewatched it again last night.

Outstanding comedy, if you haven't seen it, track it down at all costs. Dan Aykroyd and John Cusack together cannot be bettered.

And an almost non-stop brilliant 80's soundtrack curated by Joe Strummer.

9.75/10!

Sounds like you need to watch Plan 9 from Outer Space - if you haven't already :)

There is a film directed by Tim Burton and starring Johnny Depp about the director of Plan 9. It's called Ed Wood.

Watched Tenet via iTunes yesterday.

Glad I used headphones, as I was able to pick up some dialogue that would have otherwise been lost with the loud score.

I didn't hate it.

I'm not sure I liked it though.

Whilst the difficult we can do immediately, the impossible takes a bit longer. However, miracles you will have to wait for.

Christopher Nolan will be disappointed to hear that (pardon the pun!) - I'm fairly sure he went deliberately out of his way to make this particular film's dialogue as difficult to hear as possible...

I've never seen this. It looks like an influence for a dozen later imitators. Setting a very bad example for the meth users..
