Black Widow on Disney+.
Typical Marvel fare with plenty of action and a good bit of backfill of the main character’s past without making it an origin story. I was relieved that the film hadn’t been ‘Disneyed’ with messages of the day. Entertaining in a James Bond, Mission Impossible, Die Hard kind of a way as well (suspend the laws of physics, etc). I purposely didn’t read or watch any reviews before watching the movie. I think that helped.
7.5/10

davidcole: Rewatched empire of the sun. Always loved that first track.
Didn’t realise it had Christian Bale it. Was still very good
Have you read the book it's based on? Equally good.

ugh, same! Volume up for dialogue, hard press down all other times. Pretty forgettable movie.
Are you using a surround sound setup? If not, multiple channels of audio don't squeeze into two channels very well, so the system might try to normalise all channels into a single stereo feed, which can make the volume an issue. Happened to my in-laws all the time, they'd complain about not being able to hear stuff on their older soundbar that I could hear fine via my surround setup.
Ohhhhh! Thanks, had no idea! Just using the speakers on my tv. I don’t really want any more clutter around the house. I wonder if a couple Bluetooth speakers would help.
Watched Army Of The Dead (NF) with the lads last night. Mrs Penguino was out and probably would have not enjoyed it.
It's a zombie heist movie.
I enjoyed it in a 'take your brain out' (appropriate for the theme) way. It's stylish but not in a 'endless slow motion shooting sequences' way.
The makeup and set people did an outstanding job.
Character development and depth of story was a tad shallow but didnt hinder the overall fun.

Most of the posters in this thread are just like chimpanzees on MDMA, full of feelings of bonhomie, joy, and optimism. Fred99 8/4/21

It wasn't as woke as it could have been, but it did have a pretty clear "women are only bad if they're being controlled by men" theme.
I thought the first 3rd was actually quite solid, but it turned into a completely ridiculous farce by the end.

Are you sure they didn't just use real zombies? It's a lot cheaper apparently, but you do need to sacrifice the odd cast member to keep them fed.
We still have the problem of people mentioning/recommending these movies but not informing us where they themselves viewed them, FTA, Cinema, Streaming Provider or DVD/Blue-ray.
Perhaps a highlighted banner at the top and bottom, below the page count, of each page within the topic to remind posters to do so.
Whilst the difficult we can do immediately, the impossible takes a bit longer. However, miracles you will have to wait for.
Just watched Chernobyl 1986 on Netflix - it got quite gripping, focused a lot more on the liquidators (in my opinion) than the earlier TV series
"Hail Satan?"
Interesting documentary movie about origins of The Satanic Temple.
A couple of years old, the movement has grown and changed somewhat since then, learning from some mistakes made in the early days by members not adhering to the seven tenets.
The movie was remiss in not acknowledging the good work done by the ACLU who were/are also involved in legal fights opposing unconstitutional (in USA) authoritarian theocratic extremism. It did cover some of the history of the gradual creep of monotheistic wording into various official mottos and pledges etc and the rise of the Billy Graham style of theatrical white evangelism as a reaction to the cold war "red peril" panic.
Rates 7.3/10 on IMDB, I'm a little surprised it's that high, as the subject is kind of touchy which often leads to brigading of review sites, but at least some of them have a bit of humour injected:
Let's not pussyfoot around here. These people are freaks. They walk around naked in their stupid clothes, they wave banners that disrespect others, they manipulate the media, they play music with disguised messages celebrating some shadowy supernatural figure, and they just think they're better than everyone else. And then there's the Satanists.
Bird Box 7/10 Netflix
Reasonably watchable alien disaster story although the idea that you could survive a number of years without being able to go outside unless blindfolded is too far fetched let alone undertake an extremely hazardous journey.
xpd:Space Jam (2021) - Don't bother. At all. Even for the kids. Just don't. Even for free. Just don't.
