And yet, "Shadow in the Cloud" among the best movies of 2021 (stuff.co.nz).  I've not seen it; and from what I'd previously heard, I don't want to.

I read that too and as a result can't take any review by James Croot seriously ever again; the movie is just awful.

I have to agree that James Croot can't be taken seriously.

All at the movies:

The Eternals - the worst of all the MCU movies. Yawn.  3/10

Venom 2 - better than the first one which I can't remember at all. 6.5/10

Spider Man - No Way Home - the best of the Tom Holland SM movies. Lots of heart, emotional impacts, humour, and the action wasn't too bad either. Crowd erupted into cheers at a few scenes and clapped at the end. 8/10

That's about my superhero fill for the year I think. Only movie left on my agenda this year is the new Matrix movie.

The French Dispatch

If you love Wes Anderson you'll enjoy this film.

A worthwhile respite from superheroes, epic sci-fi etc.

8/10

In terms of quirkiness and enjoyability, how would you rate it against The Grand Budapest Hotel?

Not a bad movie, from 1955.

Needless to say, it is safe for work, unless you get fired for watching a movie at work :)

I also watched Spiderman - No Way Home over the weekend at a Cinema for the first time in many many months. Less fun and funny than some of the earlier ones, but deeper. I didn't think much of the choice of Andrew Garfield as Spiderman nor much of the casting of Tom Holland, but I have to admit, I was wrong at least about Holland who did an exceptional job. I wouldn't consider this is a typical superhero movie, but for all the right reasons, and it is a totally fantastic movie. I highly recommend it. 9.5/10.

It was pretty special that's for sure.  Better than The Matrix Resurrections too....by miles.

The last 3 weeks been busy at nights watching a few movies from various sources.

Dune: Part 1 - Love it - 9/10 - Left off at the right spot too.

Hitmans Wife Body Guard - 7/10 - thought the first one was slightly better

LBJ - 6/10 - A bit Ho Hum

Venom Let There Be Carnage - 6/10 - the first movie was definitely better

Ron's Gone Wrong - 7/10 - Great family entertainment

The Fourth Protocol - 7/10 - An oldie but still good

Coco - 8/10 - Really great family entertainment

Whilst the difficult we can do immediately, the impossible takes a bit longer. However, miracles you will have to wait for.

A Boy Called Christmas 8/10 (Cinema)

Wonderful family movie.  Great night out with the kids.  More than I expected and an interesting twist on the beginnings of Christmas.

Venom: Let There Be Carnage 1/10 (Cinema)

Don't know why I tried this as I didn't particularly like the first one.  Hoping for some mindless entertainment value in a moment of boredom, but it was just ridiculous. CGI was the only redeeming feature for me.

Being the Ricardos 0/10 (Prime)

Lucy was a little before my time but I knew of the show, and like both lead actors in this bio. Sorry to say that I lasted 45 minutes before I just couldn't do it any more.  Script was a mess, confusing, no cohesion, hard to understand the accents (lots of fast talking and mumbling), and couldn't warm up to any of the characters.  Despite the caliber of the leads I didn't get any sense of the original people.  And what was up with Nicole's face?!  It was painfully boring.  Probably an Oscar nomination in there but it wasn't for me

The Last Duel 7/10 (Disney)

Ridley Scott epic based on a true story of the last duel to the death in France.  The 3 leads were magnificent, particularly Jodie Comer who stole the show (again).  Tells the same story from 3 different perspectives which got a little repetitive but it was an interesting twist.  It's a longer movie (bloated?) so settle in, and not for the squeamish in places.  Wonderful costumes and amazing sets.

Lazy is such an ugly word, I prefer to call it selective participation

About a week before Christmas my local Hoyts did an advance showing of Ghostbusters: Afterlife.

I took my Mr12 along and we both really enjoyed it. Many nods back to the original so if you are of an age where you saw the original as a kid you'll probably enjoy this too - especially if you now have kids of a similar age to you back in the 80s. Its fairly predictable to be honest, though I went in knowing almost nothing about it and smiled a lot of the way through it. Has a good pace and is just a bunch of fun really.  Not going to be for everyone...but if you like the original its worth a trip to the cinema when it gets its full release. For me and my son it was a good 7/10.

The Matrix Resurrections.

What an absolute abomination. Nothing like the original 3. One of the worst movies I've ever watched. Only sat through to the end because I'm a huge Matrix fan.

Poor acting, atrocious story, disappointing action sequences. Felt like a parody for a lot of the movie.

2/10
