SPIDER-MAN: FAR FROM HOME (2019) 8.5/10

Tom Holland takes it up a level in the second film in the new franchise. He now seems like the perfect Spider-man to me, Another excellent superhero film.

I'm really excited to see "No Way Home". Going by the comments in this thread, its gonna be a cracker 😃

The Matrix Resurrections

Certainly not as good as the original, and somewhat difficult to compare to the sequels (which themselves were also nowhere near as good as the original). I'd love to fully dissect it in a discussion because it has some clever ideas, but also a lot of problems - but I can't go into any of it because they would be major spoilers. Might be worth a discussion thread once more people have seen it.

There was enough good stuff in there that it could have been fantastic. But the good stuff didn't coalesce like it should have, and it was held back by the large number of major missteps.

?/10 - I think I'll need to re-watch and think on it some more before being able to assign a score.

This movie wont be to everyone's taste - Everybody's Talking About Jamie 7/10 - Prime

A gay 16 yr old, when asked by the teacher in vocational guidance class, what he wants to do when he leaves school, states (sings) "a drag queen". Using song and dance we then go on his journey to the School Leavers Prom night. Through homophobia's and gender prejudices we watch his development, maturity, into the beginnings of becoming a stage drag artist.

Richard E. Grant, as a retired drag artist, plays his mentor and to prepare for his role watched 11 seasons of RuPaul's Drag Race in three weeks.

This fun little movie was inspired by the true story of Margaret and Jamie Campbell aka Fifi la True and as they say - "Sashay Away"

I totally agree with you. I went in with low expectations and while it wasn't a bad movie, it wasn't great either.

Mild spoilers (which probably won't make sense unless you've seen the movie so they're not really spoilers):

Some really good ideas (synthients for example) but let down by poor execution. Most of the action scenes were boring and the casting was average although I really did like Bugs and her crew. Sorely missing Hugo Weaving. Also the Exiles - ug!

Keanu, who I do really like but admit doesn't have the greatest range as an actor, seemed even more wooden and confused than normal. I hope he doesn't do a Bruce Willis and start dialing in his performances now.

A shame they've pushed back John Wick 4 until 2023 - now that's how you do action (which is funny as the director of John Wick 4 was Keanu Reeve's stuntman in the Matrix movies and had a bit part in M4).

Hysteria (Netflix) 8/10

Lighthearted period drama/true story/romance/comedy about the medical treatment of women's 'hysteria' in the late 1800's.

Despite the adult nature of the topic it's more funny than lewd (not even any nudity that I recall).  Plenty of laugh out loud moments. Great acting (Hugh Darcy, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Jonathan Pryce, Felicity Jones) amazing costumes and sets.

Lazy is such an ugly word, I prefer to call it selective participation

I agree with you that that the movie won't be to everyone's liking, but, I for one  (and my wife) really enjoyed it. Having been raised in West Yorkshire, before emigrating to NZ; I can relate to life in a Yorkshire town.

We enjoyed the music and dance routines, and I would also score it 7/10.

CRY MACHO (2021) 6/10

Clint Eastwood stars as Mike Milo, a one-time rodeo star and washed-up horse breeder who, in 1979, takes a job from an ex-boss to bring the man's young son home from Mexico. Forced to take the backroads on their way to Texas, the unlikely pair faces an unexpectedly challenging journey, during which the world-weary horseman finds unexpected connections and his own sense of redemption.

A bit of a slow burner, CRY MACHO crawls along until it finally reaches its rather tame ending.

The question I ask myself after watching this decidedly average film, is, how much longer can Clint Eastwood continue as an actor? He's 91, and I have to say that any number of actors would have been a better fit for this role.

I have been one of Eastwoods greatest fans over the years, absolutely loving his Spaghetti Westerns, Dirty Harry and other great action films, but there comes a time for everyone to take a step back, and I think that time has come for Clint working in front of the camera.

The Matrix Resurrections 6/10

I did have high hopes for this but was a real letdown.

Storyline was off and having Neil Patrick Harris just did not seem to fit the narrative. Bad casting IMO

Please don't do another one.

Ghostbusters Afterlife. 8/10

Better than I thought. In fact I came away wanting to see it again.

It was well cast, tasteful, felt like the first 2 films and provided the nostalgia trip I wanted but without being out of touch or overdone. The tribute to Harold Ramis was well done.

Only gripe it is was continuation of the first film with many aspects/story lines from GB2 were not mentioned.

The door was left open for another film.

El Camino on Netflix.

8/10.  Epilogue to the Breaking Bad series.  Didn't disappoint, very similar style to BB, clever plot, a few twists, a good bit of action.  Great acting by  Aaron Paul and some good cameos from the others in the TV series.  Probably more enjoyable viewing if you've seen Breaking Bad for context.  Couple of points off for the few holes in the plot.

West Side Story 2021 - 9/10 - Cinema

I gave the original movie the same score.

Steven Speilberg's version is just as good. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

The period settings, prop's, costumes etc were excellent. The singing and dancing was superb, along with the overall acting by a bunch of relatively unknowns.

Leonard Bernstein and Stephen Sondheim, I believe, would be really happy with this remake of their classic.

Is it Oscar material ? maybe one or two.

Matrix Ressurection

I enjoyed this. It wasn't as mind breaking as the first, but I don't think it deserves the panning it has been getting. We watched the first three in preparation and it helped freshen up the story memory.

I'd give it a 7.5/10

6/10.

Far too much character development to establish how the new cast related to the old, taking up a fair chunk of the film. Egon Spengler was made to look like a real dick to his family and friends, which wasn't lessened by the rather weak explanation of his behaviour. He could have easily picked up the telephone and the whole backstory could have been cut by at least 30 minutes.

I enjoyed the references to the original Ghostbusters film, but this film will be the last in the series I ever watch, should they decide to do more.

6/10 for me, and I think that's more than it rightfully deserves.

There are aspects of it that were pretty good. The above score is probably based on nostaglia, and I suspect will go down over time.

****MAJOR SPOILERS BELOW****

Not a good thing when the Ghostbusters were the worst part of your Ghostbusters movie, it was so bad when they just walked into frame at the end and inserted themselves into the movie - it was like a skit or parody. The backstory of Egon was terrible, he was always the smartest one so why would the others think he was crazy? So as well as making Egon look like a dick, it made the others look like dicks too. And the immense overuse of the CGI ghost Egon... ok show him helping the girl steady the proton stream, maybe some eye contact and a forgiving/understanding look from his daughter. But they just kept going and going and going, I'm surprised they didn't all sit down for dinner with him.

And loads of logistical nitpicks and plot holes:

  • How old was Egon's daughter meant to be? The actress is 40, so assuming the same age she would have been 3 years old during the original Ghostbusters? That doesn't track.
  • When they where speeding through town, once they had the ghost caught in the proton stream why didn't they just stop the car? The proton stream is to hold him in place so they can trap him, it's like a lasso.
  • The Ghostbusters hotline from 35 years ago is the same number that Ray has for his bookshop, even though he seems to want to hang up on anyone wanting to talk to him about the Ghostbusters?
  • They can catch a physical terror dog in a trap now?
  • When the traps at the end sucked in all the ghosts, why didn't they trap Egon as well?
  • In the post credits scene Winston takes Ecto1 back to the firehouse (which still has the containment unit running in the basement), even though they established earlier in the movie that the firehouse was sold and turned into a Starbucks?

I gave the above 6/10 score simply because (up until the last 15min) it was still actually kind of an enjoyable watch, despite all the problems.

GHOSTBUSTERS: AFTERLIFE (2021) 7/10

My first movie of 2022 (Happy New Year everyone). Hopefully the first of many.

Having been a big fan of the original 1984 Ghostbusters film, I approached this 2021 take with low expectations. Especially after the train wreck that was Ghostbusters: Answer the Call (2016).

Not one to look for a movie's faults (which I am sure I could find in most movies if I looked close enough), I did notice some anomalies that stood out like a sore thumb, but having said that, I actually really enjoyed the latest offering in the Ghostbusters franchise. Fun, and with a nice soundtrack, I have to say that it was a pleasant surprise.

FYI: Keep watching right to the end of the credits.
