kryptonjohn:TBH I'm unmotivated to upgrade VDSL to fibre... as VDSL seems enough to stream HD movies without buffering. If I go through the hassle of dealing with shared driveway issues (and the potential mess) what benefit would I notice?
Benefits of fibre over VDSL.
Lower ping rates.
Easy to end and start a new PPP session- just unplug and plug back in the Ethernet cable between the ONT and router.
Better reliability- cabinets don't need power, line faults are much rarer, fibre is not affected by lightning or power surges. Faults such as a digger damaging fibres are also easier to repair.
The line faults one is a biggie. If you have ever experienced the hassle of getting Chorus to trace an intermittent line fault, you will definitely jump to fibre asap.
Being able to post speed test results to people who live in countries that supposedly have better internet than NZ.
