TBH I'm unmotivated to upgrade VDSL to fibre... as VDSL seems enough to stream HD movies without buffering. If I go through the hassle of dealing with shared driveway issues (and the potential mess) what benefit would I notice?

Benefits of fibre over VDSL.

Lower ping rates.

Easy to end and start a new PPP session- just unplug and plug back in the Ethernet cable between the ONT and router.

Better reliability- cabinets don't need power, line faults are much rarer, fibre is not affected by lightning or power surges. Faults such as a digger damaging fibres are also easier to repair.

The line faults one is a biggie. If you have ever experienced the hassle of getting Chorus to trace an intermittent line fault, you will definitely jump to fibre asap.

Being able to post speed test results to people who live in countries that supposedly have better internet than NZ.

The main difference we saw in fibre was that more people could be streaming simultaneously, without apparent deterioration in results. That wasn't possible on ADSL.

That was only after we got our speed sorted (long story in which we doubled our speed by downgrading our fibre plan).

Why should people's insurance premiums increase because of behaviour like this.

(Insurance companies don't need an excuse to increase premiums - but why give them one?)

Burglars don't need encouragement!

True. It lures them away from your house to the softer target anyway. But I'm curious to know how they would they know the neighbours are busybodies?

If chinese people are the cleverest people in the world then why are their software applications and websites such utter rubbish?

Gigabyte for example... few of their motherboard apps even work . @bios servers all non responsive.

Hardware OK, software is soo bad.

In general, software made by hardware companies doesn't tend to be very good. I just wish that they'd document the hardware better so that developers could make alternative software without resorting to reverse engineering.

This is especially true of software written by camera companies. I have yet to try a post processing app written by one of them that is not a complete cluster***k.

Dreadful UIs. Clunky processes. Complete lack of integration with anything else. I have tried Canon, Nikon, Fuji, Sigma etc.

The only sane approach comes from the unlikely quarter that is Leica, who bundle Adobe Lightroom with their cameras.

Whilst on a photography bent:

The fact that nobody seems willing to make a high quality stills only camera these days. They fill every camera to the brim with video bloatware as if all their customers are in fact James Cameron. Who cares what codec or frame rate you use to film your cat or your child throwing food? It doesn't matter at all. Why not film that on your phone?

No doubt one day, as with all things, we will revert to stills and video cameras taking their own paths again because someone will realise specialist tools are better when specialised.

On the camera theme still, maybe add Sony to that list. I was trying to work out how to take a time lapse on my camera. Only to find out I had to buy a $15 app! The price wasn't the worse part. It was having to set up a Playstation account (or whatever Sony call their online payment thing), load it with the credit. Then download it onto the camera, which of course meant signing into the new account, on the camera!

Yes. Sony haven't quite grasped that cameras and Playstations are different, or that there is such a thing as too much choice when it comes to setting up cameras...
