That my dog died yesterday.

Edit - that really isn't small to me (at all), but amongst other emotions it certainly annoys me, principally that I could do nothing to prevent it.

That every little daft idea for how to do little things slightly differently is referred to as a ‘hack’ e.g. how to fry an egg using a slightly different cooking oil - thanks NZ Herald!

Sometimes I just sit and think. Other times I just sit.

An English person struggling through introducing themselves in Maori (ALWAYS before doing it in English) and usually to a whole room of English only speakers (or worse 2nd language English listeners who have a foreign 1st language)

1) accepting someone else’ culture does not mean trying to pretend it is your own?
2) don’t Maori speakers also cringe at this “PC” mangling of their language too?

Roadside vegetable vendors who think they own the roadside parking around their vans. Frankly I don't know why we tolerate this in already congested parking areas.

I must complain to council. . .

don’t Maori speakers also cringe at this “PC” mangling of their language too?

Several fluent Te Reo speakers have told me they have mixed feelings on this.

Positive for non-Maori people to use Te Reo; but poor pronunciation makes them cringe.

A couple of things which annoy me:

People thinking that attempting to address people in a language that isn't their own should ever be thought of as pretending that it is or could be pretended as your own first language.  English speakers routinely bastardise the English language - as I'd like to hear it - but it doesn't really "annoy me".

Topics like this coming up in an "off-topic" thread when they're almost always politically charged, have been thrashed to death a million times before, and should probably belong in the Politics forum - if anywhere.

That works both ways though.  There are a couple of One News reporters for instance whose English pronunciation is woeful.

Or is it an accent? We live in a multicultural society and many people speak English with an accent, probably more evident in non-native English speakers.

Should a non-native Te Reo speaker be considered cringeworthy because they have an accent when they are making a genuine effort to speak it?

Did Eric Clapton really think she looked wonderful...or was it after the 15th outfit she tried on and he just wanted to get to the party and get a drink?

Thanks all. It does indeed suck.

Almost as much as how inconsolable it made my wife last night.

I think something either makes you cringe or not it's a gut reaction.  I don't think there is choice involved.

The comments I outlined above were opinions I specifically asked for not unsolicited comment or complaint.

One of my wife's colleagues at work had their dog pass away yesterday morning as well - probably coincidental, as I didn't think you were in the Auckland region?

No, he was down here in the Wairarapa. It's been a hard couple of days. As I said, I think I find it harder to cope with my wife being so deeply upset than I do with losing the dog, which is not to diminish how hard that has been after 11 years.

We have two left and it is surprising how much 'presence' the other one had - the place is almost silent now in comparison.

Death now officially annoys me.
