Monday morning two weeks ago I woke up to find that overnight and without warning I had lost most of the hearing in my left ear. Over the following few days all hearing completely disappeared and I was deaf in that ear - confirmed by audiology test. I had no other symptoms and it wasn't wax or anything simple like that.

GP and hospital doctors said they literally didn’t know the cause but suspected a virus. (Unless it’s an ultra rare acoustic neuroma  - a benign cyst  -  impinging on a nerve. That's operable but is brain surgery). Was prescribed prednisone - a steroid that acts as an anti-inflammatory which they thought might work but only about 50% chance based on studies/stats. They did not have a prognosis - they never said to me ‘you’ll probably get your hearing back’.

A week ago it was still at nil and, although not life-threatening, non-recovery would be life-changing. I was very concerned that this was permanent.

Over the last few days it has gradually come back and is currently about 90%. Hopefully good chance it will be 100%. Totally weird but I’m very happy so it makes me smile.

Funny you should say that: my right ear went funny about six weeks ago where certain sounds had what I'll call "interference". It's very hard to describe. A test confirmed that I was losing hearing in that ear. Then, over the next 3-4 weeks, it gradually came back to normal, and for the past fortnight or so has been absolutely fine.

Sounds very similar doesn't it (no pun intended).

I currently have interference/ringing/tinnitus in my left ear but it's not too bad and under the circs it doesn't concern me. I'm thinking it's part of this issue and will go away if/when this episode ends.

Did you have any treatment for this?

I had prednisone for a lung thing when I had covid and that other thing doing the rounds, and it seemed to completely stuff up my eyesight's ability to focus on different things so now I am one of those people that has to hold things out at arms length to get any focus on it. Apparantly it may "come right" but so far not :(

I get the impression that prednisone can be a bit dangerous. Certainly when you're taking it, you can't just suddenly stop - you have to taper down the dose over time to reduce the chance of bad things happening.

Nothing apart from the "try to avoid loud noises" that the audioloist suggested.

Seeing my now elderly dog get up from a good snooze, to wander about the house, have a drink and look for some food, then go have a nap in a different place, because getting up from a snooze is quite tiring.

It doesn't help that he looks like a puppy - easy to forget he's an old boy now.

He really enjoys those naps, though.

There's a website, "Fandom", full of wikis for various games, movies, etc. It's full of scripts and makes the fans ramp up.

The thing that makes me smile is learning that you can change the URL to "antifandom" to get the same content on a much more computer-friendly page.

What would make me smile is if, whenever a developer thinks "I know, I won't display any kind of useful error message related to the problem that just occurred but just print 'Something went wrong'", the Terminator would materialise next to them, quote the anatomical line from the first Terminator movie, and shoot them in the head.  After a year or two of this happening round the clock, we'd be left with developers who don't think "Something went wrong" is an appropriate error message.

(If anyone knows of a more G-rated way to express that, I'd love to see if I can slip it into a report somewhere :-).

What you would be left with is a serious dearth of people named Sarah Connor.

There is a fairly bad mosquito problem in the community I live in. The management company has begun installing mosquito CO2 traps. For those that don’t know these use artificial scent and CO2 to attract the mosquitoes where they are sucked into a trap by a fan. They use approximately 500gms of CO2 a day.

A resident flat earther has gone berserk on the local WhatsApp group claiming that the trap 25 metres from her front door is poisoning her and her dogs. She got very upset when I pointed out that the units weren’t commissioned and had no power connected.

The photo was very clear, the one way valve on the trap was closed and the power feed was coiled up. It’s very unfortunate.

There's a lot of great bakeries around but imo Daily Bread in Auckland takes the cake. Despite the pastries fronting their website right now, they mainly bake bread and sell from a small number of own outlets and through Farro supermarkets.

Their sourdoughs (particularly the 'Pioneer' one) and baguettes are absolutely brilliant and I now have a real addiction problem - could be weight-threatening.

That my little Asian shop around the corner can easily compete with Amazon's prices and that the owner lets me browse around his shop with confidence while he carries the new delivery in on the pallet outside the door. Sometimes I help him with heavy items and he is very happy about it.
