Cooking with my kids.

My 3 year old loves helping with the cooking, he's graduated to slicing the softer vegetables himself, like mushrooms (yes I know mushrooms are not technically a vegetable).

Meanwhile my 20 month old is quite happy to spend half an hour out on the deck washing potatoes. He does need a change of clothes afterwards but he has so much fun. Fortunately potatoes don't bruise easily.

Miss 5 though, so unhelpful 🙄

That's cool. 2 outta 3 ain't bad :)

Handle9: We’re fostering for a dog rescue at the moment. I’d kind of forgotten how enjoyable it is to walk a dog when they have been taught to walk properly.

When you’re in your groove together and you can walk with a slack lead in two fingers it really is one of those very pure joys. The only real problem is feeling like she’s not going to stay a foster, which will cost me a fortune at some point.

Have one at work now that was a foster fail. Great dog. So well behaved compared to the other one that was chosen as a puppy and then fussed over.

When landing towards the West at Whenuapai, RNZAF aircraft fly almost over our house on the North Shore. Just saw one of the ‘new’ Poseidons approaching  - which is now doing circuits in the area. First time I’ve seen one around here.

Sometimes I just sit and think. Other times I just sit.

Be interesting to know if they land - the whole premise behind the umpteen millions of dollars spent to relocate to Ohakea was that Whenuapi was too short.

They should be able to land OK, taking off with a full load might be a different matter.

As I remember, one of the issues at Whenuapai was that the taxiways & runway aren't rated as strong enough for a fully loaded P-8A, so would require a complete dig-up & replacement - very, very expensive.
Also the aircraft hangars are old (and probably asbestos-riddled), so it was much cheaper to build new ones at Ohakea than refurbish the old ones at Whenuapai

Ohakea's longest runway is 2.2km, Whenuapai is 1.95km, Typical takeoff distance is 1800m, and 1400m for landing, so not much room for error at Whenuapai.

Whenuapai seemed pretty long when I used to ride my bike up and down the runway with my friends. Until we were chased off by the MPs in their Land Rovers because an Orion was circling overhead waiting to land.

@eracode, you'd have been in a great position to see the first of our brand new C-130J-30 Hercs arrive at 3pm this afternoon if they'd also flown in from the west, but it arrived straight-in from the east instead.

Ohakea also allows for "bombing up" of the aircraft, since it's in a rural area. A task that would have been done at Ohakea anyway if the aircraft were based at Whenuapai.

The new hangar and adjoined office building was purpose-built for the P-8, so made sense to build it where there's plenty of undeveloped land available.

Back in the early 2000's there was a project stood up to check out the feasibility of moving everything at Whenuapai down to Ohakea (Project Takatini IIRC), but ultimately it was going to cost too much, and having all the NZDF eggs in one basket wouldn't have been a smart move with regard to natural disasters wiping out a Base.

That's the same direction, over @eracode's house presumably. Did you see it?

@RunningMan, I may have read that too quickly and missed crucial detail haha.

Missed that unfortunately but, now I know they're around, will keep an eye out.

Just thinking how exciting it must be for RNZAF personnel getting brand-new proper-sized aircraft - and not just one model but two, in close succession. Like us mortals getting a new car but on steroids. They'll be like cats with two tails - and that hasn't happened since they got the Vampires.

I would have thought it would be more exciting not knowing what was going to go faulty next.

The small three-piece, cast-iron French saucepan set that I received unexpectedly. Everything fits together and only takes up the space for one pot. It is enamelled so that nothing sticks. It doesn't seem to matter which recipes from around the world I cook in it - they've all worked so far.

That despite my reservations, Mightyape service has actually been as good if not even slightly better since Kogan bought them.

I've had 3 outstanding interactions with them in a row. Rivalling Amazon for customer service.
