I've had 2 major ops in Wellington public hospital where I had no complaints about the care. The difference was that the timing was subject to the current emergency cases coming in. Being bumped several times, twice on the day of the operation has given me a different attitude towards people that become "accidents" by driving like idiots.

Handsomedan:

My wife is in hospital for a small operation.

She is in a private hospital, as it's covered by health insurance (thanks, Health Insurer - you're really earning your premiums this year!).

The single private room is a like a small hotel room crossed with a hospital room. The staff are incredibly attentive. The meals are amazing. nothing is too much bother for the very well staffed facility.

I feel like I want something cut off or reconfigured, so I can have a stay there.

It makes you realise how woefully understaffed and underfunded our public hospitals are when you visit one of these establishments.

But it makes me smile that my wife is gettig such good care and attention.

Agree, but the thing is private hospitals don't run emergency rooms, intensive care wards, nor do they do high risk operations, long term care, etc. In effect they take the "easy" stuff, sort of how other private companies who compete against councils/government services just take the cream off the top and leave the expense for the tax/rates payers.

Don't get me wrong, the couple of times my eldest son has been in hospital with surgery for [instert appropriate titanium brace/plate here], his care has been fantastic. But you reaise when waiting in the emergency & accident care areas and then up on the general wards just how many more staff they really need and how much more funding is required to not only fully staff these establishments, but to maintain them as well.

Private hospitals are not only well funded by the patients and insurers that pay for them, but they are usually pretty modern (as you'd expect when paying a small fortune to have a surgical procedure).

I would imagine that the staff are probably better paid in these places too.

But...as I was saying - the staff and the care was great when my son went public for his various surgeries over the last few years.

My washing machine is fixed, no more repetitive out of balance events per wash cycle.

Although the machine drum did wibble back to the centre on the horizontal plane, the F&P guy demonstrated that it had a problem on the vertical.

If he pushed down on the agitator there was too much give.

Verdict - dodgy suspension rods.

Replaced all 4 and it's working as expected again!

Out of curiosity, what did that cost? We have had similar issues for a while now and I was thinking of flogging the top loader and getting a front loader to alleviate the problem.

We just bought a front loader.  I would strongly resist the urge to buy another. For one thing the front loaders are extremely heavy and therefore difficult to move. You have to bend down to load and unload them.

It was just over $400 all up.

$120 call out fee.

$65 labour, took less than an hour.

$165 suspension kit as above.

$52 GST

The tricky part was getting the top off the machine.

Changing out the rods looked like it could be DIY-able with a long screwdriver.

Pretty much like that.

Didnt bother removing the lid, just unscrewed the top and I held it back while he worked.

Very long screwdriver useful for pushing the rod down so it could be removed.

My machine didnt have that rubber thing joining all 4 rods, just a metal spring in one corner.

All 4 rods were showing signs of wear so all were replaced.

All 4 removed at once, and then replaced a-la power pylons.

Then he did a test with 2 towels, got them wet and ran a spin cycle.

Handle9:Having onsite and offsite backups when there is data loss on the production server.

Many, many years ago I did a tape backup of a Meat Works Slaughter Chain Weigh Grade system as I could "see a reason to do one".

I was not responsible at all for the software, only the hardware.

I dutifully borrowed a portable parallel port tape drive (Yes - that long ago!) from a friend. Did TWO Backups of both the Lamb and Beef chain systems.

I gave one copy to the Plant Operations Manager to keep in his safe.

The other copy I kept in my vehicle.

Needless to say that sometime later, after a "software upgrade" the plant ground to a halt.

Long story short, they had been down for 2 days before I was aware, needless to say their copy had been thrown out as the systems was still running some time after I made it!

I restored their system for which they were Extremely (Shall I say) Grateful.😀

(The meat pack was excellent)

They learnt the value and reason for backups the hard way!

This is a bit less critical, it's just my homelab server, but it's nice not to have stress about losing data
