Yes you have.  Every time you click on "Install updates"...

I have at least turned auto updates off. I like to review the change notes before clicking on install updates. It should be mandatory for app developers to provide meaningful change notes. Nothing worse than clicking on the details to see a generic statement "bug fixes and performance improvements".

On my desktop I review the release notes while the updates are installing...

I've managed to actively avoid most of the media coverage of the US election campaign. I guess I'll see whatever nonsense occurs on Wednesday but that can wait until then.

We've just had a representative from Microsoft come to our office this morning to tell us how Copilot is going to revolutionise how we use M365 applications. As we were wrapping up one of my team members asks "So you've rebranded Clippy?".

Quite aside from wanting to know what the reaction was, I'm assuming that by "revolutionise", they mean, "force the users to go in circles arguing with it"?

The first version of Windows Copilot, the one on the sidebar, which is now retired (already) was... a thing.

I asked, "What time is it?" his reply was twelve hours behind, clearly GMT.

I mentioned that we are in NZ time and the time given was wrong.

I thought it would get it right because it runs on my Windows machine.

But no, everything is sent to the cloud.

And the thing came back saying I was wrong, that the time it gave me was correct.

I closed it and never used it again.

So it was a perfectly implemented Windows element then?

Not only that, my new PC has a "Copilot key". It just opens a search dialog. What an absolute waste.

Cloud spending continues to surge globally, but most organisations haven’t made the changes necessary to maximise the value and cost-efficiency benefits of their cloud investments. Download the whitepaper From Overspend to Advantage now.

It got quite the chuckle out of the audience but I'm afraid the Microsoft rep was too young to even know what Clippy was. Hopefully he will google it when he gets back to the office.

I was wondering what that button would do. I've been too afraid to press it on demo units in shops. Just in case it installed Windows on my iPad.

You can reprogram that key in Windows 11 latest builds.

It's actually quite useful, you use it to trigger macro commands via AutoHotkey.

Perhaps he could Co-Pilot it?

I've always wondered what on earth would possess a company to name their search engine the same as the sound their operating system makes when it experiences an error!?

Copilot (not voluntarily installed by me I might add) does tend to agree:

So copilot is a replacement for clippy?

You could say that Copilot is a modern evolution of Clippy! While Clippy was designed to assist with Microsoft Office tasks, Copilot brings a broader, more sophisticated set of capabilities to the table. I'm here not only to help you with productivity tasks but also to answer questions, generate creative ideas, provide support, and more—all with a dash of personality.

Think of Copilot as the next generation of virtual assistants, aiming to offer a more engaging and versatile experience.

This remarkably precise expiry date and time:

Perfectly fine at 18 minutes past 8 on Monday, but gone off at 20 past 8.

Edited to add: The peanut gallery asked whether it was on a piece of software.
