I've managed to actively avoid most of the media coverage of the US election campaign. I guess I'll see whatever nonsense occurs on Wednesday but that can wait until then.

I am doubling down on this today.

The smile, or the thing? Cause if the thing is bigly, then this isn't the thread for it. 😉

What a classic.

I've always wondered how a middling central american country gets to be named in the chorus of a rock song.

Getting 6.5k upvotes on a 5 word comment on Reddit. OMG. Shocked as wasn’t even a controversial subject. Would normally be lucky to garner 2 to 6 in my unassuming presence there where I usually don’t comment and just absorb with interest.

Both. This is the thread for things that make you smile. I’m smiling.

Well...as it turns out, it's not the country they're singing about...

The Origins

The Van Halen tune was born from a dare of sorts. The band’s frontman David Lee Roth had reportedly been criticized by a member of the press for his sex, drugs, and rock n’ roll repertoire, and said the rocker only ever sang about women, parties, and fast cars. But wait, Roth realized he had never written a song about the latter, so he decide to pen one.

The song is said to have been inspired by a car he once saw at a drag race, a car christened the Panama Express. However, the song’s lyrics—full of engines revving, pistons firing, and wheels burning— harbor plenty of innuendoes (It wouldn’t be a Van Halen song if it didn’t), and the “car” may just be a vehicle to sing about…

Yesterday Mrs Code was baby-sitting our 18-mo granddaughter, C, at their home while C's parents had other commitments. Mid-morning she took C in her pushchair on a 1-1/2h return walk from their home and along Tamaki Drive on Auckland’s waterfront.

Near the end of the walk she realised that C was missing one of her shoes. It had been there in place 30 mins earlier. They retraced their steps for 10 mins looking for it - but had to abandon because they had run out of time. The shoe could have been anywhere on a 2-3km stretch of the walk.

At 6pm our son used an electric scooter to follow the relevant part of the walk route - and found the shoe, about 2km from home. Someone had picked it up and placed it on the sea-wall.

😀

I have turned off all my news feeds. Still getting used to it but my productivity has already improved.

Yesterday, I removed myself from the Trump and US election threads, removed the Washington Post and The NY Times politics feeds from my reader and left all sub-Reddits involved in politics.

There's nothing I can do to change the outcome of the US voters' actions, and I don't need to spend time reading about the dumb stuff that is happening or will happen.

They get what they asked for. We will deal with whatever affects us when it happens. Until then, it's their problem.

freitasm: Yesterday, I removed myself from the Trump and US election threads, removed the Washington Post and The NY Times politics feeds from my reader and left all sub-Reddits involved in politics.

I mostly stopped reading the ones here (which apart from the Guardian are the only politics ones I read) when they turned into pages and pages of speculation over who would win.  Post-win I've occasionally scrolled through them during tea breaks, as the batched replies at times will indicate.

Same with the Covid thread during the height of Covid, better not to obsess over it every day.
