I NEVER use the self checkout. I would rather queue at the single one that is staffed. Why should I do the store's job for it? They already make enough money. Let them do the socially responsible thing instead and hire some more people. But if they start giving me a discount for saving them the cost of hiring those people, I will consider it.

I use Shop-n-Go at Pak-n-Save as it's faster and has less human interaction (other than the occasional rescan check).   The concept of filling a trolley, then having someone process each item from that trolley into another trolley in order to charge you for the goods is positively archaic and pointless double handling.

Not sure if it's already been discussed, but Apple TV

(Note: this is in the app installed on my TV, the Apple TV box may be different)

Pretty much every VoD service shows you a show and a brief description of it so you can get an idea of if it will interest you.

Apple TV - here's the title, and a picture; off you go.

For me, there seems to be an additional BDSD, when you move down to the next row, it doesn't start at the beginning of the row, indeed, it's hard to see where in the row of items I am

A genuine question: Why do people not want receipts or fuel vouchers?

BPA?

If you're referring to PaknSav fuel vouchers - it's because we may go to PnS 3 times a week - and buy fuel once a month and then usually from Costco.
So, to us, their paper fuel vouchers are just a waste of energy.

Zendesk. A couple of months ago they added a bar to the top of the window advertising "new navigation" coming soon, and inviting me to try it. First of all, it's not directly actionable: there was no button to try it out, but rather it said I needed to contact my administrator to opt in. Who would ever bother with that?

Over the next couple of months I received two or three emails harping on about this new thing, including with the specific date that it was coming.

The date came and went.

About two days afterwards, it finally went live. There's now another banner at the top telling me I can get more information about the changes.

And the changes themselves? So minimal that I'd have barely even noticed if they'd never said anything.

Microsoft has completely broken their "snipping tool". Used to be quite effective, now it lags for 10+ seconds every time you use it.

It works fine for me. Make sure you check the "Automatically save original screenshots" settings is correct and the folder is not in a network share for example.

We have a piece of enterprise software called Datascape. The search field is rigged up so that you don't press Enter: it simply does a search if you haven't pressed any keys for one second. If you're a slow typer, or you just glance away to e.g. check the spelling of a name, then it'll do a search even though you've only half-typed the search term. That in itself wouldn't be terrible, except it also removes keyboard focus from the field!

An elderly friend lost her hearing aids a while ago and got them replaced by insurance at some local audiologist.

Many bells and whistles, but when investigating a problem I found they ALWAYS AUTOMATICALLY go into Bluetooth pairing mode for some time at power-up - and they have grabbed somebody else's phone or TV!

She's fine away from home, but when she gets home she has to take the aids out.

I installed the management app on my phone, but there's no way to drop an existing pairing - have to go back to the audiologist.

Of course, that audiologist has now retired, the new one has never seen these aids and doesn't want to know - maybe the previous person sold her the most expensive ones languishing on the shelf that nobody would buy.

You can disable BT at each power on by a long press, but not forever. She doesn't want BT, says she hears the phone fine through the aids.

She's now talking about buying new aids full cost... I think I'll have to walk round the neighbours! Or try to find the NZ importer.

Has anybody noticed that when powering on an iPhone, it no longer lists the dots to input the PIN code on first boot? Simply pressing the power button to sleep the screen & then wake it up again now shows the dots for the PIN.

Walk up, scan item: "do you wish to continue?" No. I just walked all the way over here, so that as a left handed person I can be forced to use the right handed configured self checkout, and I accidently took an item from the trolley, and then accidently scaned it.

Unless it's a dire emergency I will use a proper checkout.

a bit annoying, yes... but that prompt is preceded by "this terminal is for card payments only", or words to that effect. certainly the sign that says "Card Only", usually in red, is not enough for some people who want to pay in cash.

kudos to you for picking up a losing fight in principle. they'll never hire more staff if it means a bump in operating costs. not when the government is setting an example by trying to replace 10000 jobs with AI.

for me it's not so much doing the store's job for them, but completing my job of doing the groceries faster. i have to pay for those, and queuing at that staffed checkout counter behind even just 2 customers with full carts would cost me more in terms of time. this is especially so because i usually do my groceries after work, when it's quite busy. perhaps shopping at 10am on a weekday would be different.

Google Maps walking directions. Seems to be hard avoiding crossing a road at the closest point and instead diverting the walk to cross at a bus station. For example 149 Victoria Avenue, Remuera cross the road to 170 Victoria Avenue, Remuera it proposes a 1km walk!

I actually was looking at a longer walk starting further away coming up Combes Rd but still got this weirdness at the end. Note: there is no pedestrian crossing at the turn-around point. If I start the walk from the further south it flips the walk the other way to a similarly pointless diversion to cross the road at a non pedestrian crossing. Both diversions happen to cross at a bus station?
