I'm in a new house with only a heat pump and am freezing my brass ones off. Screw modern - give me a fire again. It works when the electricity doesn't. Actually rephrase that - it works!!

Where are you? We've had heat-pumps in Queenstown and Auckland and they've been brilliant. The Auckland one doesn't heat the whole house, but then I don't know if a fire would either.

Chch. New heat pump. Had the repairer in once after install It had lost all its gas to bad install. When it is on heat mode it should blow hot / warm air then stop blowing anything when it reaches temperature. Instead it blows cold air regularly.

The problem with heatpumps is they are blown heat, not radiant heat. Radiant heat heats up the environment and it the type of heat the lasts when turned off. Blown heat goes as soon as it turns off. fires = radiant heat.

It will be blowing the cold air, simply so it can measure the room temperature. Ask the installer if a separate temp sensor could be fitted. Otherwise some models have temp sensors in the remote control. It might just be a simple settings change to use the remote control sensor instead.

The lack of an industry standard that has been implemented by courier companies around what items to leave at door vs leaving a note to pick up from depot.

In the past week, I've gone into a courier depot for an item that's clearly labelled as having a value of $5 on packaging, whereas another courier left a $25 package at door.

IRD online account services... or lack thereof.

It has been erratic over the last couple of years, more so in the last week.

Maybe you should just take it as a sign and move there? ;)

If it makes you feel any better, Google thinks I'm in Auckland, no matter how many times I adjust it. I've had the same static IP for about five years...

Meanwhile, my grizzle du jour is about Intel's SSD firmware update tool. Instead of just providing an .exe that you can run, it's an app that you need to install. You only need to run it once, and then you need to uninstall it again (since you're never going to use it again once the firmware is updated). Why can't it just be a "standalone" app?

It also drops an icon onto your desktop, as if you're going to use it daily.

When people, usually TV reporters, say something like “This item is four times cheaper than that one” or “This one weighs three times lighter than that one”. This is almost a non sequitur to me. Does it even make sense? Why not say one is 1/4 the price or one is 1/3 the weight. I’m gettin’ old.

I noticed that the other day - could not get into MyIR to claim a tax refund. Worked the next day.

Ha. The really odd thing is, Ponatahi seems only to exist on roadsigns and maps. There is no actual place when you get there - no grouping of houses, local shops - nothing!

Sometimes Google adds a suburb of Dunedin (Fairfield) to my address in Mosgiel (also a suburb of Dunedin, though in the 80's it had its own Mayor)
So I get [my address], Fairfield, Mosgiel, 9024; other times I get my correct address [my address], Mosgiel, Otago, 9024

Companies that supposedly order spare parts overnight and you work from home expecting to be called with an "Ok, we got this, bring the car in" just to call them when no call comes and find out that they never actually put the order in, and don't even have a record of the problem.

They must have been taking lessons from Vodafone customer service.

Facebook. It usually states that our local SPCA (in Palmerston North) is 0.5 miles away. Today it has decided it's 6.5 miles away.
