mattwnz: Energy saver bulbs are also fluorescent, so should also glow under the same conditions.

Probably wouldn't work because the Field Strength which causes Fluoro bulbs to light, works on a Volts per Metre basis.? With a standard Fluoro tube at close to a metre long, a decent voltage builds up to power the discharge.? With a CFL, the distance from one end to the other is very short because it is in a coil, so there probably wouldn't be enough voltage unless you were in an immensely powerful electrical field.? If that was the case, it would probably be most unwise to live there!

I do remember the fluoro tubes in the ACU huts beneath those masts at Henderson lighting up by themselves though.? It gave a quick visual indication that the mast was live, so provided a useful warning.

You are probably right, although I can get energysavers to light up with they are close to a plasma ball.

I have a view from a friend who is a long term resident in Kelston who raised her family in the area. Happy to share this with you if you want. Can I ask why you chose to live there if you were concerned?

The Lines Companies around NZ would refer you to the Information provided by Transpower. Transpower have a number of pulications that discuss the safety of Transmission lines and the fallacy of EMF from transmission lines. In saying this though, as previously mentioned the research is very much 50/50 and there is no definitive answer for the effects on people.
The Transpower publications I have seen as very much PR and as heavily biased towards safety in the same way the hippies are biased towards crazy waves and laser beams.

One thing I would advise is not to have pets or animals living near. Some of the effects have been long noticed on animals such as horses who appear to be very sensitive to any possible effects.

A recent study in the UK (can't find the exact link, but here is an Aussie article referncing it. (I believe there is an even more recent one someone too)
http://www.leukaemia.org.au/fileadmin/dl-docs/factsheets/LF_Powerlines_position_statement_Aug07.pdf
An older study
http://www.bmj.com/content/330/7503/1290.abstract

Transpower do actively discourage underbuild for safety reasons. Lines can stretch quite a distance in hot weather and when under heavy load. Don't want this happening when the kids are bouncing on the Trampoline under them.

Edit: Spelling and additional line.

If I lived under transmission lines I'd probably want a metal roof, maybe grounded. It may not help, but it's unlikely to hurt.

You would need a complete Faraday cage to do any good.  A metal roof on its own would have minimal effect at 50Hz.

Before when we bought the house I researched and it was apparently alright(didn't find much info) so we bought it. But then as I said a friend now keeps nagging us about it.. so I decided I would research a little bit more.

This is completely unscientific and has no factual basis but my friend who raised her family in a house close to the pylons had significant health issues with her children when they became teenagers. One developed cancer and the other a form of heart disease. She had a view that the pylons contributed to the problem.

As I said, not factual and don't panic over my comments. Just a view from a long term resident. I personally don't have a view on the topic, but probably wouldnt take the chance.

Did you see the products that guy is pedalling. Hah hah hah. Pitty the links don't work, I'd love to know how the Gia Universal Guard protects me from EMF emissions - by emitting more EMF??

Where I grew up we lived in staff housing at a power station, there were two rows of staff housing, both running parallel to the 132KV lines. In the row of houses which was around 75m from the lines, 4 people from different families got cancer, and one died of it in the 18 years I was there. Also many suffered fairly bad hair loss.

The second row of houses which was probably 150m away from the lines, where I lived, didn't have anyone contract cancer in the same time period.

They had measurements taken and I saw the photo's showing the electromagnetic fields around the lines which didn't show it engulfed the houses, however the effects we saw on peoples health is enough for me to be concerned.

Hi,

The Late Dr Neil Cherry was an acclaimed researcher in the area of EMR.
A local Christchurch man who dedicated quite an amount of his life trying to prove EMR isnt good for humans.

http://www.neilcherry.com/profile.php

On the site you will see the research papers and findings. Dr Cherry was starting to make some 'industry' nervous prior to his untimley death in 2003 (from what I can remember reading about in local media in the late 90s / early 2000's.
