How are the skewers turned? is that a drive mechanism on the rear of the BBQ?

BraaiGuy:
Well firstly we don't use gas and always use real charcoal. Nothing beats boerewors, lamb chops or steaks over real coal.

We use a Weber Kettle BBQ. They fairly costly, but they come excellent waranties. I even have the portable version which we take camping.

BBQ in South Africa is known as a braai. The difference between NZ and SA is than in South Africa its a very social thing, and it mostly always involved real fire!

Watch this video and it may give you an insite to what I mean:

Whenever I think of a braai, I think of this.

John2010:

If you do want propane only, then you will have to go to the likes of BOC but I would suggest it is a waste of effort (and likely money too) doing so.

Sweet as, thanks for clearing that one up for me/us.  As I said, I had heard it but haven't tried.  Won't bother now.  Cheers.

Does anybody know of a 'cheap alternative' to a branded Webber BBQ?

I like the idea but I'm not paying $400 for a fire basket.

I like gas BBQing for the convenience, but I'd also like a slow cooking over coals option.

Any ideas?

Summer is a state of mind, not a state of the weather.

BraaiGuy, the thing I love the most about your pics is the guy without shoes at the BBQ, he understands the Summer State of Mind.

The problem with the cheap alternatives is they won't last. The warehouse sells simular types for about $40.

Shop around, you may be suprised. You may be able to pick up a Weber from Mitre 10 for $250. I have seen them for that price on special before.

We dont have official suppliers here in NZ so although you getting the real thing from some suppliers, not all of them will carry the extended warantee and will be covered in NZ.

Also ask yourself, are u going to be just using it for a small amount of people? We have the small "SMOKEY JOE" for camping. It also suites us perfectly when its just the 4 of us at home as it does not require as much charcoal. We use the 57cm one only when we have friends around!

Yeah, I think the Smokey Joe may be the way to go.

There is just the two of us at present.

Thanks for the tip.

The Weber's really are worth it. The bowl seems a lot deeper than the cheap ones. My basic weber kettle bbq is 7 years old and still works well. Can't shut the bottom vents anymore and the rack for the coals is rather concave, but still does a good fire & feast.

You can't beat real fire for the flavour, gas is just not the same! We use the bbq brickette things - takes about 45 min before you can cook, but you'll easily get 1hr+ of cooking time off them.

We like doing whole chickens with a spice rub (just cut them down the centre with kitchen scissors so they are flat for cooking) and whole pieces of scotch or eye fillet. With freshly made bread and salad. YUM.

Yeah, I'm coming around to the need for a Weber. I'm not really interested in using it for grilling so much as I have a grill pan which works perfectly.

What I really want it for is slow cooking stuff like large joints or slabs of meat such as lamb, beef and pork with the hood on. I would preferably like to smoke it to some extent. It won't be something to do everyday but more like an excuse for a gathering on the weekend so 45 min to get to heat is no problem.

Now I need to do some research for recipes.

So I went out and bought myself a Weber One Touch Gold from a guy on TM, who bundled a Chimney and accessories for $400 which was considerably cheaper than they had them without accessories at the Home Show this weekend! After a bit of mucking around with assembly I proceeded to light it and cook my first BBQ and all I can say is WOW. Just WOW. I can't believe how much better the food tastes, and whilst I did get a couple of my sausages a little black on one side, the rest was near perfect including juicy steak!!

I intend to give it a few more runs, but essentially my wife and I already decided we are very likely to sell our Gas BBQ in the coming 4 weeks!

The briquettes, can you re-use them, or once you cook with them, they need to be discarded?

Since it's not a great day for an outdoor BBQ, this is going in the oven, covered with tinfoil for 30 minutes then 20 minutes without:

The top fat is going to sip and flavour the meat, carrying that salt goodness, making each piece melt in your mouth...
