Exactly, the speed a made for purpose commercial mower could mow the roadside is dozens of times faster than an individual resident ever could. The council may save $3 million but the cost to the city is far higher in wasted time, severed toes and fingers, rodents, unsightly mess and litter entering the harbour that wasn't picked up by the mower guys. Many people will not or can not mow the roadside.

People in central Auckland want the council to do it and are willing to pay for it but councillors from other parts of the city whose whole civil identity is based on being against central Auckland will stop it out of spite. As Mike Lee said, "outer suburban small-mindedness and parochialism".

Should we diversify this thread to include free domestic rubbish removal in central AK where the poor westies have to not only now their own berms but they have to buy council rubbish bags for weekly collection

The Auckland Council was talking about going to a pay per kg bin collection system. Expect dumping, bin raiding and more litter.

I believe our rates have historically been the highest in the Auckland region for a long time, while some peoples rates are rising, mine are decreasing. So much so, they have a limit to how much ones rates can go down by per year, my rates decrease are limited to this maximum limit.

Edit, also I know you're likely joking about us westies, but a rubbish bag is, I believe about $2.10. My family is of 5 people so we usually put out 2 on rubbish day, for a total spend of over $200 per year, that the other areas in auckland don't seem to have to pay.

Don't forget the inorganic rubbish collection that everyone else gets free but we have to pay $15 a pop for.

I was thinking more of beds, couches, tvs, ovens, etc. Why bother taking it to the dump if the council is responsible for everything?

I think you just described every council office in NZ. However having dealt with both SWDC and the WCC you have the easier to deal with special needs centre I can assure you.

I browsed this thread to see who mows the berm when you have a shared driveway with back sections addressed 1, 1A, 1B, 1C etc. Is it the house closest to the road or do each of the houses share the job equally? I can't see it happening that all share as each will think it is anothers turn.

Admittedly, I haven't done it for a few weeks - it's full of holes dug by Chorus at the moment......

Its mowed by whoever is first to get tired of having a scruffy berm outside their driveway. And once they've caved in once, its their job forever.

That makes no sense to me.....

I can't mow it because there are holes and such due to UFB installation. They'll be gone in a week or so and then I will get the weed-wacker out and tidy up.

This discussion just highlights the downfall of society, there will always be a genuine subset that are adversely affected by process changes but i bet most of the noise comes from people not genuinely affected by such issues
