Satch: I have just never understood why vegetarians want what are traditionally meat dishes but with non meat items. A hamburger is for meat. So is bacon, and not that vegetarian bacon substitute crap. I mean, seriously what is the point??

This attitude is just soooooo common in this country!

I wonder if you understand why people are vegetarian?

Some of us aren't vegetarian because we don't like meat, but rather we may be so for reasons that include ethical, environmental or religious reasons.

Therefore, accepting that, what part of why vegetarians may want non-meat versions of traditionally meat-based dishes do you not understand??!!

Can I just suggest that you accept that people have values and reasons for their actions that differ from yours; it's not too much to ask to respect that, is it?

Burgers are traditionally beef mince. You could make the same point about putting chicken in a burger. It's just food innovation, get over it sometime.

At least (presumably) most of the money Burger Fuel makes stays in NZ versus most of these other chains where it heads straight over to the USA?

My local fish & chip shop does a bloody good burger for $6. Probably actually fairly healthy too, big bits of lettuce, beetroot, yum!

Burger King is the worst of the lot. They make their burgers and then stuck then in a microwave (or something like that). All their burgers look like a sad piece of bread - and taste like that. Never ever seen a BK burger that looked even close to the photos.

I find BK hugely variable . Sometimes they have the worst burgers of the lot -- but, a fresh and well constructed BK whopper is hard to beat.

I suspected BK use the microwave to warm burgers some time -- it makes the bread go too hot and a bit soggy.

Actually, most of the money paid to the big chains does not go straight to the USA. Carl's Jr, Starbucks, KFC, Pizza Hut, and soon Taco Bell are operated by Restaurant Brands, a NZ company on the NZX (so their money stays in NZ, minus the franchise fees paid to Yum Brands in the US). Burger King is operated by Antares Restaurant Group who appear to actually be mostly UK owned. Subway and McDonalds are 100% franchised, so the money goes to the franchisee. Wendy's is operated by the Lendich family from Parnell, so that money stays in NZ. Burgerfuel is operated by Burgerfuel Worldwide who are on the NZX, so their money would be the same. I can't find any record of Hell Pizza, but that's a franchise so same as Subway and McDonalds anyway.

Very few big US brands are actually directly operated by their big US parent. In most cases they are actually franchised to local franchisees (the money mostly stays here) or sublicensed to a local master franchisee (often listed on the NZX) who then chooses to either operate their own restaurants (KFC, Pizza Hut) or franchise it out (Cheesecake Factory).

I don't see why they would bother franchising a US operation nobody in NZ has heard of instead of starting one from scratch and saving on all those fees.

Only if your BK has mayo in it because I only get mayo if it's a BK chicken. Everything else is soggy because it goes into a microwave oven.

I realised I haven't been to BK since the 1990s so they may have toned down the mayonnaise drenching by now.

Is Burgerfuel any good? Do people really pay $13 for a "Bastard" ?

At BK you can ask to have it without mayo (and anything else you don't want).

In Norway you can get them with wholegrain buns as well, which is a bit healthier (and that I like better).

On a recent trip I tried chick-fil-a it was good and healthy. Another good one was chipotle (5-6$) for a massive burritto .

They're in a different league to the standard joints like BK. The bun for starters is actually something tasty and substantial. Sauces are interesting and flavourful. They're also large and substantial burgers - my wife always orders one of their small ones as the large ones are too big for her.

My suggestion is just try one and see for yourself - may not be your cup of tea, so to speak, but you'll never know without trying it!
