There's an old aphorism "You can tell a lot about a man by his shoes" and it remains true.

Better shoes also last far longer and classic patterns such as Oxfords, Punched Oxfords, Brogues, Veldtschoen etc never go out of fashion (although Veldtschoen really only work with tweed suits, which Kiwis would not probably wear or indeed be able to buy in NZ).

Not necessarily cheap shoes, although I do notice people who wear suits that are ill-fitting more than people  wearing cheap shoes.

The problem I mentioned to wife yesterday, while applying shoe cream to a few pairs, in front of the TV, is that some people don't pay attention at all to their shoes and you don't see shoe shine services in New Zealand like you see somewhere abroad.

So, yes, you sometimes see someone with a nicely cut suit and scruffy shoes and that's noticeable - more than the price paid.

Another vote for RM Williams. Getting my re-buffed. Very comfortable to wear and stylish.

I do notice that a lot of people do not polish their shoes...

People judge people on their first impressions (even if the PC hand wringing types believe they shouldn't)... and there are a host of people who comment on shoes, watches etc.
