So went down to the panel beater. They had already received the info from AA and took a few photos. They are submitting the quote so hopefully will be a lot quicker than the other lot were last time!

Buzz Bumble: All insurance is a scam. The greedy scum always try to wiggle out of it and pay out as little as they can get away with. X-(

It was not AA, but last year I tried to get a few panelbeating repairs done on my car and the insurance wanted to treat it as three separate jobs, three separate claims, make me pay three separate amounts, even though the panelbeatering was only one job. Meaning that despite the fact that I have been paying for full insurance for the last 10 years with no claims ever, they were only going to cover about one-third of the cost.

This sounds fair to me.  I assume the damage was done in separate incidents.

Well claim is all approved, which is good, now I just have to wait until the 17th before they can fit my car in.

Oh well.

I just worked out that AA do not do what is called excess refunds

With my existing provider's house and contents policies if the claim is greater than the excess then full payment is made i.e. the customer doesn't pay the excess AA do not offer this

Now I wonder what value I should put on that ? On one hand is is obviously a marketing incentive but on the other hand it is value IF I ever make a claim on house and or contents

If an insurer "overpays" then all of their customers pay for it and the premium goes up.
Good for some, bad for the majority :)

In my experience with them, awesome.

I've only used them for auto insurance and once an AA member.

I've had a few windshields replaced instead of mucking around with crack filling. The glass company I delt with a few times said it was repairable, AA just opted to replace the whole screen each time as part of windshield cover.

A friend was in a few prangs and she always got everything sorted really quickly and promptly with them too.

I've never had a bad experience with them.

The family in Australia are insured with GIO (AA's underwriters) and they've never had issues with home/contents claims.

Logged my first claim today.

Was driving home yesterday, a couple of angry dudes were standing in the middle of the road with their arms out like they're carrying pumpkins, sorrounded by a small audience. Could only surmise a fight was going down, or about to happen. I had no room to turn around so I went past, as I did, one dude starts to make for my car and smashes off the left wing mirror.

I didn't call the cops, because it's my hood and I drive by there everyday, but also, I think the cops won't do anything to this type of lifeform and it will continue (I also didn't get out of my car and yell "WTF?").

Put in a police report this morning - willfull damage, cops agree stoppping would be bad for my lifeforce.

Called AA, was told that as I did not call the cops at the scene, I would have to pay excess - $500 (usually I don't). I somehow doubt the mob would put up with a white boy standing around calling the cops and it would be easy for any disgruntled mobsters to walk up the street and surmise where my house is.

Wingmirror costs under $200 with shipping. I am competent to fit it myself, there is no other damage to the car.

I guess I have to suck it up. Was wondering if I had life insurance with AA if they'd have okayed my hasty retreat...

If it is only going to cost you $200 then ring up and cancel the claim and do it yourself?

You don't have to keep going with the claim if you find out it's not going to be worth the money. When I caused an accident I rung up and lodged a claim and the guy specifically said to me if the cost is going to be less than the excess ($500) just ring up and cancel your claim and settle it yourself.

Think you should call Fair Go with that one. Could be interesting to learn if AA really think you should risk your life to have something like this covered on the insurance?

And this is why NZ needs a Castle Law that applies to public places.

Not sure that AA will pay for my bullets, but I think a shootout in Poaka Avenue will likely be a bit OTT.

I'm very much considering a dash cam today, given I seldomly violate the rules of the road....

Sorry it's been a while since I promised a update, so here it goes:

As mentioned before I took the car in on the 17th.  Picked it up that Friday (21st).  Paid for the excess and the extra work I had done then.  Insurance claim finished, no issues.

However, after a closer look that night, I was unhappy with the  finish on one of the wing mirrors (part of the extra work I paid for).  Nothing too major, but there was an imperfection that would bug me forever. I got around to going back on the Wednesday (26th).  The guy agreed that it wasn't up to scratch and told me to bring it back in for a day and they would fix it.  Just had to give a days notice.  I called on the Friday (28th) to confirm I would bring it in today (Monday 31st).

Took it in this morning, picked it up this afternoon and all sorted.

Unlike the last repairer, who were a nightmare to deal with and didn't want to hear anything after they got paid, these guys accepted their mistake and fixed it with no fuss.  So if I need to make another claim (touch wood I don't), I will go back to them.

TL:DR Insurance claim finished, no issues with them.  Small issue with the panel beater's work, but they made it right so happy with them too.
