The best interislander trip was one where I could only remember an hour of it, good times.

The flight back to Auckland was interesting, dry mouth + someone that wouldn't stop talking to me -_-

chevrolux: Sitting in that lounge is no different to sitting in Koru Club, catching your flight and then getting in your car parked at the airport. should Koru club stop serving alcohol?!

It isn't, because you can drink on the boat right up to within minutes of getting in your car.

I'm frankly amazed at the number of people who seem to think that it's fine: it probably explains a lot about the driving here.

Yes it is pretty much the same.  If you're on an evening Koru Hour flight you get free booze on the plane too so you can be drinking until about 15 minutes before you drive off in your car so not really that different to the ferry scenario you describe.

As another poster said, if there was a problem with people drinking on the ferry then driving drunk you can guarantee the police would object to the ferry liquor license and set up checkpoints on the roads out of Picton.

I have just written to them and asked them why they don't do so. I look forward to the response.

They don't because apparently it's not currently a problem. When drivers are caught drinking they're asked where they had their last drink. And let's just say don't be the stink guy that ruins Friday night drinks for your workplace.

Friday night drinks is quiet - I walk from my office to my kitchen, pour myself some sparkling water and walk back to the office...! It's about 20 paces each way.

That aside, if your staff are leaving work drunk as a result of work drinking, it is time the practice stopped and the employer faced up to acting responsibly I would say.

It's sad when you can't remember good times.  frown

Terry Wogan used to call them 'Senior Moments' - like when you go upstairs and stop on the landing wondering what the heck you are there for..!

Who is going to pay for that? Who is going to do the breathtesting? Are you happy to wait the additional 2 hours while they breathalyse everyone?

Seriously is this even an issue or just another case of anecdotes not being data.

In France, it is a legal requirement to carry disposable breath testing kits in your car.

It's something that might concentrate a few minds here too.

But rather more than that if you get caught DUI....these are the maximums available to judges:

Driving with excess alcohol of ≥ 0.8 g/l in blood sample/Failing to co-operate with a breath test .....EUR4,500 fine, 2 years imprisonment, 6 penalty points (out of 12 I think) and 3 years licence suspension.....

Get caught again..EUR9,000 fine, 4 years imprisonment, 6 points and 4 years suspension

Ignore your suspension...EUR4,5000 fine, 2 years imprisonment, 6 points and 3 years suspension.....

The kits are supposed to encourage self testing to avoid the harsh penalties. Of course, we don't really have harsh penalties so maybe we need that regime first.

I don't understand the mentality of drinking and driving, we should have a three strikes and out law for it here, first offence mandatory 12 month loss of licence, second offence mandatory 24 month loss of licence, third offence and you lose your licence for life.
