Dingbatt: In a couple of days time. Normally we leave it up all of December. This year in going to use the Belkin wemo switch and sensor I picked up in the black Friday sales along with IFTTT to run the lights (just to be geeky about it).

Lol I'm doing this now also.
first look at WeMo and it appears only useful for things that start immediately when the power is applied?
Eg lights, fans etc. relatively useless for the likes of gas heaters, TVs, washing machines etc

Motion on Christmas tree lights works well though, with a 15 minute run on time.

If you have pets, then 2 days before Christmas, otherwise you can set it up a week before Christmas :)

Otherwise you might lose your stick insects.

our new kitten loves the tree, it  runs around and around the tree to get to the top and then spends the next 5 minutes knocking everything off the tree on the way down. Given up on the lights.

Common sense is not as common as you think.
