alasta: I personally found this ad offensive, {snip}

How did it "offend" you? Are you an animal? Or a toyota owner?

A few km from where I live, a girl took her own life by sitting in the middle of road and waiting for a car. I don't mind admitting the possum bit actually made me a little nauseous.

Do I want to ban the ad? No.
Do I want to buy a car from a company stupid enough not to pull that tonedeaf piece of crap? Also no.

And that is exactly your choice... Glad to see someone with a brain.

My brother hung himself in 1990.
I don't get offended by hangings in movies, tv, ads, music videos, etc... They didn't do it.

Neither, but several of my closest friends are animals.

Toyota used their choice to stop the advert, they were not ordered to do so. People who complained exercised their rights as well.

Toyota probably received market research data that indicated the advert was not doing what they wanted and achieving negative results.

So you're offended on someone's behalf.... Well done.

Toyota has a history of very good advertising campaigns, this advert was terrible.

Correct.

I'm also very comfortable to make it known that I would be offended by any advertisements degrading women, muslims, homosexuals, etc. even though I am none of those things.

You keyboard warriors can attack me all you like, but it won't silence me.

A person has every right to be offended, just as that same person has the right to say something offensive - in my opinion mocking someone and trying to shut them down for finding something offensive is no better than trying to shut down someone who you consider offensive. My opinion is that a person has a right to be offended by something but they have no right to impose their beliefs on other people - but that's not what's happened here. I'm still of the opinion that making the ad potentially offensive to a group of was a marketing strategy, so far we have a 4 page thread about their advertisement. The people this ad is targeting aren't the people who found it offensive (obviously), and long term people will probably won't remember it.

My point is people get offended over the most basic things.
I'm offended by treatment of refugees, isil beheadings, governments trying to stop people vaping, and cops killing people.
Ads that aren't important, peoples feelings on twitter, and social media BS in general aren't worth being offended by.
If a TV ad offends you, you must have a charmed life.
