Just stopped by Whakatane NL and tried to get them to price match Harvey Norman. No luck. The guy said their margins weren't good enough (fair enough, I was being a tad cheeky. They'd be taking a $800 loss according to their system) but it seems a bit disingenuous to call it a price promise if a competitors price is simply better.

What were you price matching?

To be honest, like the previous posters have mentioned, if they don't follow through with their promise, then they shouldn't advertise the fact. They are likely to get more customers in with such a promise so it is only fair that they play by their own rules.

I would have pushed them to price match.

It does seem like false advertising, these seem to be their conditions for it and I can't see anything about their margins needing to be good enough.

If the product isn't on their shelves, they won't price match... is this the case with the Harvey's product?

Which term did they use to get out of it? They have to use a term, although they have so many and several are vague that I am sure they can get out of any match if they really wanted to.

I have often had issues with a NL in chch often making things extremely difficult to price match or simply saying they will not do it.  No reasonable reason given.  When I brought up the terms they review them like they have never seen the page before.  Then say some other clause "not listed" as the reason.  But clearly they just don't want to do it.

I don't care if they price match or not, what I expect is reasonable service, without any attitude.  But every time we go to this particular store they always make the shopping experience quite difficult.  We are not crazy large spenders, but have purchased over $2k's worth of goods this year from them alone.
And dealing with warranty returns etc always a massive issue and a pain, taking up several hours of our time trying to prove that a cell phone does not work correctly, etc.

I have to be honest, we literally will not be shopping there anymore.  I have visited another NL in town and they were much nicer to deal with.

He didn't use the terms to get out of it and I'm sure if I pushed him hard enough he would've done it, but it was an impulse buy at best that I didn't need so I backed off. The manager was a nice guy but was clearly sweating it, basically begging me to just head over to HN and trying to find an alternative product.

Very technically HN were sold out but they didn't try check. Not too bothered but it just screams of false advertising.

The best thing to do in that situation is to email their head office to get it sorted. No point in arguing in store with the staff. Often when I have emailed a  head office  of a company about things like this, the staff in store is in the wrong, and it is then honored. Potentially stores risk breaching the Fair Trading Act if they don't honour advertised terms.
