List of longest prison sentences

In 1989, the world's longest sentence for corporate fraud of 141,078 years was handed down to Chamoy Thipyaso in Thailand according to Guinness World Records 2006. She defrauded more than 16,000 Thais in a pyramid scheme worth $204 million at the time.

And closer to home:

Martin John Bryant is an Australian mass murderer who pleaded guilty to murdering 35 people and injuring 23 others in the Port Arthur massacre, a shooting spree in Port Arthur, Tasmania, Australia on 28 April 1996.
On November 21, 1996, Bryant was sentenced by Tasmanian Chief Justice William Cox to the maximum penalty of life imprisonment for each murder, and an additional 1,035 years for wounding 23 people, shooting at 14 other people with the intention to kill, four counts of theft of a motor vehicle, three counts of arson and one of kidnapping.

Doesn't being in a society require acting socially acceptably?

When someone chooses to live outside of society why should they be eligible to the perks of society?

You can give them all the excuses under the sun, but for every sob story that lead to a crime how many people have had it as hard or harder and not committed a crime?

And if you think Thai type prisons don't provide a deterrent, I have seen this happen. A friend of mine smokes dope regularly and was sent to Thailand for work, when he got back I asked him what he did, he went cold turkey as the risk of smoking a joint in Thailand was so high that it wasn't worth it. - How has that not worked then?

If we were to take the Australian Aboriginal POV (where they have been in Aussie for over 65000 years), there is no such thing as property ownership, so how can there been such a thing as theft ?

Or perhaps you prefer the Mormon view, the Muslim view, the hedonist view, Buddhist, etc etc etc . How about the early english view in Aussie where it was OK to get a licence to shoot abos ?

Judged by those standards, you too are a failure. I'm sure you too have an excuse.

Your need to judge, condemn and punish people is perhaps a reflection of you needed to feel superior to someone because you are surrounded by people in all walks of life who have simply done better than you.

I have an intellectually handicapped son, and I have seen how "good" people treat him.

Self righteous people are among the worst.

So you want 5 years for a biosecurity violation (apparently) because the perpetrator is "Wealthy [and] White" but are happy with a few months as a putative sentence for a string of burglaries.

And you would have the Australian authorities execute two little dogs ?

I get frustrated with concurrent sentences. A person robs 8 homes. Gets sentenced to 6 months for each but served concurrently and is out in 4 months because he was well behaved inside.

I am more than Happy for you to shell out another $10,000-$14,000 for the remaining 2 months.

I get frustrated with people who bitch about paying people a benefit, then demand longer prison sentences.

I also get frustrated with Wealthy White people getting a slap on the wrist with a wet bus ticket, perhaps if Johnny Depp had his dogs shot, and him put in prison for 5 years then everyone may have more respect for the law.

Dogs from other countries can bring all sorts of diseases, rabies for example, as well as ticks and other pests. Island nations such as Australia and New Zealand could be devastated if these diseases ended up here.

We can see from the impact on our Kiwi Fruit orchards why bio-security is important. We have also had the painted Apple moth, suspected Foot and Mouth where whole herds of animals were destroyed.

Even where countries are tied by land, e.g. Canada/USA they still require declaration, proof of vaccinations, etc etc etc etc.

Johnny Depp and the likes have all sorts of "minders" who's job it is to make sure this sort of stuff does not happen. There was ZERO chance they were unaware that what they were doing was illegal. The Pilot of the plane would have known for starters.They had to declare what they had onboard just like any other international traveller and they lied.

That crime carries a maximum penalty of 10 years in jail or fines of up to A$265,000.

What did they get, no conviction, no fine, nothing, zero.

If that had been me, I would have coped a huge fine and would have been deported at the very least.

Their arrogance could have costs Australia billions, yes the risks are that high.

They could have done the right thing, they could have declared, they could have legally bought the animals in, its not like they can't afford it. They had all the opportunities and choices in the world to do the right thing but they deliberately chose to smuggle the animals in illegally.

That is why they should have had the book thrown at them. And THAT would have been a deterrent for all the other wealthy.

Those who still think draconian prison sentences and other punishments achieve anything are just looking for a quick fix solution to their own sense of frustration. This is not an answer, people.

I've given you everything you need to understand why that post of yours is fundamentally indefensible if you take concepts like following the rule of law and honouring one's and a country's international commitments seriously. Seriously, opinions are like you know what and if you want to keep focusing on being offended as opposed to understanding why your argument is impossible to seriously defend, be my guest. And for the record, I didn't call you uneducated and I don't call everyone who disagrees with me uneducated. Perhaps you might like to re-read my original post?
