I am a fan of lettuce and Marmite (NZ), Marmite and cheese, Marmite and Honey, try it, you'd be surprised.

Had a flatmate that did a 1 sandwich meal. Slice of fresh Vogels, in the day when we could get it direct from the bakery, smother it in honey, press sultanas into the honey and top it with a slab of cheese. The sharper the cheese the better.

Fresh bread with a slab of salted soft REAL butter.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Like your style, not a spread of butter but a SLAB. Just how I love it, especially on fresh home made bread.

 

Olive oil with a bit of pink himalayan salt is yum too.

 

 

My father prefers to slice his butter like cheese rather than spread it.

Some of you will remember this, bread and dripping , oh yeah good for the arteries that one surprised I am still above ground.

 

 

When I were a' school my mate's mum always kept a pot of fat from roasts on the stove. Pure, saturated solid white fat.

 

So we'd run home from school - about 3km, fire up the stove top and deep fry a few slices of bread each. Crunchy golden brown deep fried fat sponges. Heaven. 

 

And we never got fat either. I think after that we'd run down the bush valley behind the road and throw stones and old ladies's roofs, or nick a chocolate bar from the dairy. God, we were little bastards.

 

 

 

At boarding school I became very fond of baked beans on fried bread. Way better than toast! Try it.

I'm Dutch - one of my favorites is:

Peanut Butter, Sambal Oelek (has to be the Conimex brand) and Cheese.

 

For those that don't know Sambal Oelek is a hot chilli paste often used in cooking.

I don't think you can get it in NZ, at least I have yet to see it, but there is a cheese spread called Primula in Europe that comes in tubes like toothpaste.

There's a very tasty version with smoked ham in, and I used to buy a box of Ritz crackers and squidge Primula over them and make Ritz sandwiches in front of the TV!

Growing up in South Africa we had a spread called "Fish paste" which is already quite a 'strange' spread but my sister grew fond of it with [SA/English] marmite...

The most I could do there was Marmite, cheese and lettuce, but my own favourite was to swap my  boring peanut-butter-and-syrup sandwiches with a mate who brought ultra-cheap 'Melon and Ginger Jam' sandwiches :D
