Vodafone for landline and fibre. Nova energy for power. Never had the gas connected here. My partner has her cellphone connected to Spark.

That's us for energy and communications providers. So we're a bit all over the place with three different providers.

I’ve no interest in linking various utilities together from a single provider, as I think overall one is worse off as a result and certainly things are far less flexible. Eg, I’m in the process of moving from BP to Spark for internet (simply for a one year deal and I’ll reevaluate at that point), but if this was provided by my electricity provider this would much more complex. Similarly, it’s let me switch electricity providers a bit, chasing the most appropriate deal.

At this point I’m more than happy with Electric Kiwi for power, with currently over a quarter of our usage falling in that free hour of power. Gas is with Nova, who I found were more than happy to offer me the same significantly cheaper rates available to new customers, when I asked... my sister calls me a rates sl*t, and I guess she’s right..

Utilities companies give consumers “package discounts” to provide them with an apparently strong reason to remain, but it’s rare that these give the best value. Insurance companies are the same - personally, I find it far more effective to elect the best policy at the time for a specific purpose, whether this be due to better terms or cheaper premiums. I’ve not worked out whether the no claims bonus for life type policies for car insurance would be enough to hold me to the same insurer, given I doubt we’d ever make it through the required period without a claim!

2Degrees for ADSL, previously they were Snap; about to switch from Genesis (who took over my prior company) for LPG to Elgas' tanker because Genesis' prices are higher than I negotiated with my prior company and frankly I am sick of always having to haggle. About to switch from Tiny Mighty for electricity to either Pulse or Ecotricity because after Tiny upped their prices either will be cheaper. Pulse gave me a better deal after a call but with Eco the point is their price is always pretty good- Pulse feels sneaky because they don't give prices online...

Electricity providers are always a PITA; they'll all give you a decent rate then put their prices up.

Edit: I do have all my insurance with one company because it is in my case cheaper to have it all with one. Tower in my case. Never had to claim so no idea what they would be like if we had to.

That rate is quite pricey. Did you take a look at Powerswitch? I think in your case Electric Kiwi may work out to be one of the cheapest for you due to their per kWh rate and daily charge. I'm a low user and personally have found Flick Electric to be the cheapest for me (averaging 21c/unit over a year so far despite the recent spikes and the dry summer).

For your ISP don't go with the cheapest - I've blogged about it Here today. I also wouldn't recommend My Republic to anyone.

Honestly I found Powerswitch to be confusing, I will look at them in a few months time I like to look at different options every 2 or 3 months since I would like to save where I can where possible. I plan I chose from Contact is good for myself and my partner as we both use our vehicles excessively and the cents off will help.

I guess in hindsight I should of first announced my intentions before changing. I just hope I don't get charged a cancellation fee from Orcon as I can't seem to confirm if they will charge one or not to cancel the power portion of a contract, would be rather silly if they did IMO, in hindsight again I should have confirmed this with them.

For power, find the lowest online rate you can then call around- power companies will undercut each other and you pay less (an exception was Electric Kiwi). The problem is you have to keep doing it after they hike the price back up down the track.

Couple things I don't like about power companies are a) 'discounts' for prompt payment b) 30 day disconnect notices if you want to switch

Bigpipe for naked broadband (I don't have a land line number), Skinny for mobile, Meridian for power.

I've just switched to Flick, waiting for my first bill, and hope to see a saving over Mercury who put their prices up from 1 April. I was on a special rate for Standard - All Inclusive. The price increase was from from 18.8 to 21.1c/kWh and 213 to 258c/day. Was with them for five years and no current issues with their service. We only switched because of the price increase.

I'm with Vodafone for broadband and mobile phones.

A bit off topic but I have been trying since last week (granted only Friday) to get Elgas (LPG) to confirm they can deliver by tanker. There's a fly buys promo available only until Monday. Icalled on Friday and emailed Saturday and I think I called again earlier this week. No contact back. How long should it take?

@JAyadee put in your order now and if they CAN fulfil it you qualify for the special, but if they cant fulfil it you haven't lost anything?

If they can't deliver by tanker there's no point signing up with them... pretty sure it can't just be a one off order to get the fly buys plus a hundred dollars of lpg :)

Edit: suppose I could try...

@JayADee, who did you end up switching to (if you have)? Moving house and looking at going with Ecotricity on eco Anytime or Low User and looking for any feedback on how they are.

I went with Eco on low user. I just right this minute got a confirmation email that my account is set up so I can't tell you much first hand. Pulse undercut their price a bit (pays to call and negotiate) but Eco steadily has had low prices since I started checking them out since about a year ago and they have their prices listed online unlike Pulse. Also, a friend of mine has been with Eco a couple years that I know of with  no complaint. Plus they have an EV plan. We are thinking our next car will be electric. And Pulse had some pretty negative online reviews (yeah I know, I am sceptical of online reviews too)

As for LPG, Elgas' tanker doesn't deliver to my town so I might as well stay with who I am with as the price is pretty much the same and my present company hasn't been the cause of many woes.
