This is where we differ. I don't care remotely about fairness to criminals.

I've been burgled twice and wouldn't have the slightest concern what happened to the scum who did it if it prevented them from doing it again.
If they don't like consequences perhaps they could, you know, not commit crimes.

Ok so a couple of questions for you then;

1) If you were to be involved in an accident, where you killed someone, and it was deemed you were at fault, would you suggest it reasonable to be executed for it?

2) What if you drove over the legal limit for alcohol?

3) What if you were speeding?

Considering the sentence for planning to, and killing someone, is about 20 years, execution for burglary would seem... Extreme?

Shopkeeper, having just been burgled yet again, is nervous and excitable. Rastafarian tourist, looking for cooling drink, enters shop and looks around uncertainly at the unfamiliar items. He is big and black and has dreadlocks. Asian shopkeeper misreads body language and grabs shotgun. Shopkeeper's new guard dog responds to his nervousness and springs at tourist, causing gun to go off. Shopkeeper's aim is bad but tourist has good reflexes and ducks in time. You, having entered behind him, do not but fortunately, under the new gun law, the shopkeeper is deemed to have acted in self-defense. You will be missed.

I understand where you are coming from and, to be honest, if someone were to get shot and even killed while committing aggravated robbery then I wouldn't be too distressed. Sometimes a little bit of chlorine in the gene pool isn't necessarily a bad thing.

However, what you are suggesting is silly. Firstly there's the risk of accidents (dairy owners small child come across gun and pulls trigger). Secondly, if criminals know that dairy owners have loaded weapons then they are far more likely to become more violent, and attack the dairy owner without warning rather than just menacing them, as that reduces the risk that they will get shot.

I'm not convinced that you would be making the country a safer place, particularly for the dairy owners themselves.

My response was for this "legal authorisation to blow away anyone who tries to rob them" there is no qualification for self defence and no specification of the offender being armed.

That is some serious imagining there.

You are acting like Dairy owners are sitting around waiting for a chance to blow people away.

How many people are going to risk the type of trouble that comes from killing someone, because someone asks for a refund.

Nothing stops a dairy owner having another non gun type weapon (baseball bat or crowbar), how many times do you hear of dairy owners seriously assaulting anyone?

I am not pro guns, but your stories need some thought.

100 packets of cigarettes have a retail value around $NZ2500 and are easily carried and distributed. For tobacco motivated robberies less stock on hand and daily or twice daily deliveries may be a better fix. The ordering system required would have to be very responsive.

Maybe they could reassign some from revenue gathering (oops sorry I mean traffic duty).
