I listed a Toyota Caldina a year ago. Had rust issues and wrecker had offered $350. I put on Trade Me (and disclosed the significant rust and warrant issues) for buy now $500 and another wrecker bid $500 (why he didn't choose buy now is beyond me).

Woke up on morning after it closed expecting to deliver to the wrecker for $500, only to see it had sold for $1,600 after a last minute bidding war!!! A recent immigrant with English as second language with no idea of value and had bid way over the odds for it! Conscience got the better of me, I could't rip him off, so told him $600 would do it.

No doubt it ended up at the Ellerslie Car Fair for $2000 where it was being sold as his daughter's as she had upgraded.

Props to him if he was such an enterprising entrepreneur (-;

Yeah ... but some items are in demand. Like Hamilton Beach milkshake machines, the old round tub Fisher and Paykel laundry machine.

Occasionally you come across a store that sells things and they want a higher price than their website to compensate them for the Trademe fee. Just use the store ... lol.

It does make it hard for retailers with parallel importing. But also made in NZ, is pretty much gone. Remember the old days when we produced our own cars?

I think it tends to be electronic items as they often have such a huge margin. So somebody buys from a bricks and mortar store who cant match the online guy, so the guy with buyers remorse is angered why they will lose the price between the 2 stores and then the sellers fee, at minimum, and that doesnt even give the buyer much of a deal.

I think if people arent aware of the online price, or in store with most established importers, then unfortunately you can only be polite and point it out, usually you get back some snide remark, so I just dont bother now. But its funny seeing things sitting on their for months.

And now you get the overseas sellers using trademe. Stock is in HK and you wait 5-9 working days.

Im not sure where I sit, certainly with things we CAN make in NZ I think we should be, but cellphones, cameras etc, I think we should get good prices just like overseas.

We didn't produce our cars. We imported the all the various parts and merely assembled them on arrival. Badly.

We didn't produce our cars. We imported the all the various parts and merely assembled them on arrival. Badly.

Yep. NZ assembled. Monday or Friday? Overseas assembled thanks!

Where Im not sure high end electronics is something we can do more than retail and import. although we do need to find different economies given the environment. but thats all off topic.

We cannot do high end electronics. Thats is done in Shenzhen, Taiwan, and Japan. Brazil do assembly also

Unsure what this has to do with Trademe auctions where individuals pay more than retail.
