I am proudly old-fashioned. Also old. And I haven't caught anything from money yet.

Anyone who can exercise a bit of objectivity and has done a bit of shopping recently can see how during busy times like lunchtimes, paywave is simply a massive timesaver for people who are pushed for time. Just look at how long some people take just to key in their pins or how often idiots forget their own pin number. And that doesn't even account for the odd person who pays by cash and how most teenaged cashiers can barely give a bit of change without taking an age after fumbling around.

This just makes me want to take even longer counting out my cash. If your time management is so poor you can't muster a little patience for an elderly person ahead of you to make a transaction, maybe you should just bring a bag lunch with you. Then you don't have to spend any time waiting at all. You can even eat on the run. Win win. I don't bother you and you don't bother me.

So why respond in such a fashion. You were clear in your view...that you prefer cash. End of story.

At the end of the day these issues all stem back to our interchange rates in NZ. The inquiry into this which is expected to slash rates to similar levels as Australia was due in the middle of last year, and was then due in April. Somebody should ask Kris Faafoi where it is!

This should partially answer your question. I have to say, though, that retailers have lost a massive amount of their supposed high ground over complaining how card fees were adding to everybody's costs lately. With the wide adoption of those ubiquitous and obnoxious "Buy now, pay in 6 installments interest free" plans by retailers, they are actually foisting presumably even higher costs than credit card fees on all purchasers.

It's got nothing to do with time management. I simply prefer to spend my time on worthwhile things like learning, relaxing, or actually producing stuff of value, instead of making a sandwich or watching people fumbling around or trying to remember their pins. Amazingly enough, it seems quite a few people agree with me. If you prefer cash, that's your choice but don't go around insulting others who don't like having their time wasted.

I've had the same notes in my wallet for a few months now. Cash is almost redundant, not a bad thing. The only thing I wont do is hand my card to anyone to swipe etc. Either I swipe or pass over or no deal.

Don't understand the hate paywave gets, I love it, and within reason avoid places I know don't have it.

I for some reason have got my pin or account wrong 3 of the last 3 times at BK.

One time they had wandered off out the back to do something, and after it fails if theyre not there to retry it, then it seems the POS software will just give up, time out and lose the order. It seems that causes all sorts of problems and the manager has to come back over to push some things on the computer and then ask me what I had ordered to re enter it. Really slows things down.

I of course say that I hardly ever use the pin anymore which is why I must have mixed it up with the one on my other card. And its my credit card so their BS about rates means nothing.

Just to clarify some misconceptions made in this thread.

There is a difference for a retailer for a NFC payment versus swipe for Visa/MasterCard debit cards.

Visa's rates for debit cards is here

https://www.visa.co.nz/about-visa/interchange.html#2

The reason why is because NFC payments go over the credit card network while swipe over the eftpos network.

See this comment in the above page

**Excludes EFTPOS transactions (defined as face-to-face card present transactions utilizing account selection and PIN) switched domestically to issuer

What that means is if the transaction is switched domestically to issuer (so the transaction goes back to the card issuer for balance verification) then it's considered an EFTPOS transaction and their charges don't apply. The charges are whatever the merchant has negotiated with their acquiring bank.

So for BK, back to the thread topic, for credit cards, NFC or swipe cost the same.  It's only MasterCard/Visa debit card that would cost them more (no idea what tier they would be on since that a commercial arrangement between them and their bank).

So pure speculation, maybe they analysed their banking charges and decided that the up to 1% charge was too much for them?  Of course the charges for credit would be higher.

I guess Burger King will simply be off the list of places I could never go to for lunch since most of the time I never take my wallet with me.

I wonder when they'll start imposing charges for people paying with cash since they have to count it?

Probably doing your health a good turn 😀

Note to self. Stop going there even once a fortnight.

Any developments on contactless EFTPOS? Maybe a protest from a giant like BK is what is needed to accelerate this process.. KFC already didnt accept it

BTW, BK Goers, yes they do have an app you can order from now with your card loaded in so perhaps use that instead, with the additional benefit of skipping the queue

Any developments on contactless EFTPOS?

There's no incentive for the banks to implement contactless EFTPOS when the card schemes are incentivising the banks to issue contactless Debit cards, which over time will be the likely  main choice for everyone.

EFTPOS costs the banks a lot of money to maintain and they have absorbed the cost of that maintenance for a long time. They're not going to sink more money into it for no payback...at least that's my gut feeling.

You can cry about the banks making plenty of money and that they should just suck it up because it's good for the wider community, but at the end of the day, there's a bunch of viable alternatives to standard EFTPOS and at some stage the Card Sche,es will have to come to the party and reduce the interchange on scheme debit/contactless payments to a point that it's negligible and becomes almost ubiquitous as EFTPOS has.

BUT - in places like Australia, there's always been a cost to accept EFTPOS, so contactless usage was not seen as an additional cost - just another line of cost that replaced one of the more traditional ones.

Do any of you guys carry a bit of cash on you for the odd occasions that electronic payment systems aren't working?

Nope, haven't carried cash for more than 10 minutes in years (Dog wash place is coins only), can think of maybe once in the past few years where eftpos has been down

They do have an app but I've never installed it. Could be the time of day Saturday morning but when I go there is no line and not many patrons also. Contrast that with the McD in Lower Hutt which is usually quite busy.

One other small but significant issue is fraud. Despite what some people may want to think, contactless hasn't increased levels of credit card fraud.

Fraud however does exist with contactless, and yet it's very minimal with EFTPOS - to the extent it would very rare for the fraud to occur without a person giving their PIN number out. Among other things interchange rates cover fraud, so with no interchange on a theoretical contactless EFTPOS solution there would be no revenue for a bank to provide a guarantee protecting customers.

I usually carry about $40 just in case of the unexpected, but I very rarely need to replenish it.
