I find this profoundly depressing. Although I don't like the act of killing, I understand and accept that everything dies so the killing in itself is not necessarily a horrible thing. But unnecessary suffering is. There is no question that more developed animals like horses have feelings and experience pain and terror. An inability to recognise that and experience empathy for a suffering creature is inexpressibly sad.

To get this right, you don't discriminate between the most humane and effective way to kill something rather as long as its dead in the end its OK?

I personally draw the line there, if you go to an animal with the desire to kill it, you do it in the most effective easiest way possible for you and it. This is how I was brought up, any I did kill a lot of sheep/chickens/pigs.
There are no reasons that support a drawn out killing on an animal for any useful reason. It doesn't make the meat more tender - it actually ruins it. It will probably struggle and make annoying loud noises as well. Makes it harder for all.

That's your personal line then, but think of it this way, is there really that much difference between what this person did, and bull fighting? Bull fighting isn't exactly quick or clean or humane, but many people still enjoy it.

Yes, there is a huge difference. Both are bad in my book.

No there is nothing similar between that and bullfighting. Bullfighting is a traditional sport that goes back longer than you and I can wave a stick at and is something that has walked from the medieval ages into current. If we started drawing lines like so we will soon back arguing if men can own Women. Takes time to break traditions, this one has just outlasted most other barbaric practices. Also with bullfighting the bull is fought until it is not able to continue, once it is not able to continue the matador executes the animal, not let go and left to do its own thing with 50 puncture wounds. I do not support bullfighting just for the record.

We all are dead and turn into compost at the end of the day, just how it goes from one state to another is where the moral question lies. Everyone will have a different opinion on that but I do understand where you are coming from with the death side of things. It is not what I agree with and I have no care to change someone else views, more understand them and give my contrast. I now understand your thoughts.

I also assume with your principals you do not bother with medical care or anything? Cause all sh1t just dies in the end doesn't it?

I wasn't aware that bull fighting resulted in the execution of the bull at the end. I have never watched bull fighting, it doesn't appeal to my taste in entertainment.

The Matador will generally salute to the animal then lunge the sword from the center of the chest through its heart, in the most respectful manner you can I suppose..

Same here, glad I also do not condone the practice.

Further update on the actual topic, is it is believed to multiple people involved. This does change the issue somewhat, as it moves from the possibility of a mentally ill individual who went into some form of frenzy, and is more likely a thought out planned attack.  That being the case, I am  now of the opinion that the people involved were simply being unmentionably cruel and sadistic.

Previously I had thought it was a mental health issue, now I believe it to be more likely a criminal matter and I hope they find these people ASAP (Because it's not unheard of for people to start with crimes like these and move onto something worse) and punish them to the maximum extent of the law in evey charge.

It's pretty hard to stab someone 40 times and not cut yourself. Hopefully that will provide the police with some evidence.

Amidst all the outrage (from most) about this, little mention has been made of the loss to the owners. The horse was a pet and a member of the family. I have had relationships like that with animals. I know how intensely painful it can be to lose them under any circumstances. It is much like losing a child. My empathy is with the poor animal, but it is also with the people who lost a loved one. I also hope the vicious cretins who did this are caught, preferably with many cuts and an extremely painful infection.

I also think there was someone restraining the horse and someone attacking given the amount of wounds and locations. I am not too sure what brings someone to do this, mental health is going to be a question no matter what the outcome of this criminally. It would have also been pre meditated, not many people carry a knife sharp and large enough to piece flesh 8 inches deep. The facts do not support someone just coincidentally finding a miniature horse, restraining it, having a knife on hand large and sharp enough to do it and then be with people who are of a similar mind to help with the actions... Does not add up. The other part is that this is something a very small percentage of the population would find entertaining and that small group would not risk possible exposure by attacking a member of the publics animal, I am stuck here thinking that this is retaliatory action.

I am not too sure why you think someone would be cut by performing this act? Most knives have a handle and you generally don't use it on yourself... In the past when butchering animals with my father, not once did any of us cut ourselves and I do not know anyone who has cut themselves when using a knife hunting/butchering. I can't see how someone would unless they were a total unco retard...

There is a massive difference between stabbing a live animal/person/creature, especially 40 times, and butchering a dead carcass.

If cutting yourself wasn't a common issue, then butchers wouldn't wear protective gloves the way they do now.

If you stab a living creature, blood goes everywhere. Blood is warm and sticky and slipperly. Makes holding an even incredibly crafted knife difficult. Take into account the thrashing around and unpredictable sudden movements and that should be all you need to know.

Also stabbing movements are completely different to slicing or cutting movements. Pressure in different ways.
