kendog: This show has convinced me, a Chernobyl tour is now going to be part of our Europe holiday next year.

Definately worth doing - and sooner rather than later.

The state of Pipyrat is now very poor, and in all honesty if it was a Western country where health and safety was a consideration you wouldn't be allowed in any of the buildings (well technically you aren't, but that's another story!). With the state of decay and obvious concrete cancer in the buildings I visited I realistically don't see how it's going to be safe to enter many of those buildings in say 5 years from now.

Would be fascinating to have a parallel series for the Fukushima incident. (Or perhaps just a high quality doco)

I also do wonder if this will dash the recent progress of small modular reactors, which if managed well, really could be a safe means to reducing so much fossil fuel use.

I can see why! more small high-cost Miniseries needed!

Another one to watch would be "The Hot Zone" about the Ebola Outbreak in Test Monkeys in the U.S

I think so. It's short and sharp and holds people's attention the whole time.

With a longer running series like BB there are always going to be episodes that aren't quite as gripping as others and that may skew people's ratings. I don't watch huge amounts of 'TV' and I may have missed out on some shows that I would probably but my top 4 in order are now:

Band Of Brothers
Chernobyl
Breaking Bad
The Sopranos

Sometimes I use big words I don't always fully understand in an effort to make myself sound more photosynthesis.

Worth Checking out "The Hot Zone" as well. not quite as intense, but another good short docudrama miniseries

Yeah, I can see why Chernobyl may rate higher than a series like Breaking Bad (as much as I loved that); I think a key component of its power is that viewers are aware what they're watching is based on true events, and the makers of it have done such an amazing job of portraying the significance, scale, incompetence, sacrifice etc of the event, its aftermath, and the people/institutions involved. It's certainly the most powerful based-on-reality TV programme I've seen.

I wasn't sure whether they'd be able to keep up the slow-burn momentum in the final episode; while it was obvious it would cover the trial, that could have been fairly dry. But the way they used flashbacks to cover the lead-up to the test and disaster was brilliant - found this almost more devastating to watch than seeing the disaster itself in E1.

Watched the Chernobyl series last night. Some very major plot holes!

1st: They're supposed to be in Russia but they're ALL speaking perfect English.

2nd: The climax of the story (Spoiler Alert: a HUGE Nuclear explosion!!!) happens 10 mins into the beginning of the 1st episode, so there's not much else to talk about after that. Yea a bit of running around "It blew up" etc etc, but meh.

Probably you'll enjoy it more if you watch the whole thing in reverse, the audio will be hard to understand then (like if it had been Russian) and then the Climax will happen at the end, not the beginning.

I'd agree that wasn't binge-appropriate content (for me, at least). First off, I found it very full on - it was, at times, difficult viewing. Second I feel I benefited from the opportunity to cogitate and ruminate on what I had viewed before seeing the next instalment, even if it was only a day's gap.

Another thing to note - the soundtrack was very effective; little 'music', but a lot of background sounds that contributed significantly to the constant feeling of dread. I'm so impressed with many of the soundtracks and sound designs of many contemporary programmes - so much effort goes into this now.

Pffff. It's not even that big of an explosion. It blows up like, one building (that looks like it was built in the 1980s anyway), and we're supposed to believe a zillion people all had to evacuate?
