Anyone have any tips for rejuvinating some rusted grills? I'm guessing engine paint is not the way to go. They're just cheapo bunnings ones but I'm just after edible food that won't kill me.

That is great, but I urge you to omit that green stuff on your plate and save it for your compost bin.
I don't mind a small side of green, as long as it weighs less than the meat.
Do you work on a volumetric weight as some greens weigh much less especcially without dressings etc.
I'm not a complete idiot, I still have some parts missing.
No greens. Potato salad, yes. Tomato and onions salad with a balsamic vinaigrette? Yes. Green? Sacrilege.

First BBQ of the season at our place last week:

I ❤️ this great big hot plate for quick/impulse BBQs. It has also been used quite a bit for breakfasts and brunches. I can cook a whole family worth of pancakes in one go. Does great halloumi, fish, mushrooms, corn and asparagus for those less carnivorously inclined.
On the gas vs wood vs charcoal issue, horses for courses. I've also got a cheap charcoal grill, which isn't really any harder to cook on than gas, but you do need to allow an extra 45-60 minutes to get the charcoal hot first (definitely use a chimney). Flavour is different, much smokier, and you can experiment with mesquite like wood chips or herbs to flavour. Plus rubs and sauces.
I went to the Dillingers BBQ smoking session as part of Wellington on a Plate last year, and that was an awesome intro to wood smoking. A basic Bunnings offset smoker has been obtained but not yet christened. Aiming to do baby back ribs for Christmas day. Smoking definitely requires a time commitment though - all day tending the fire. Which is a pleasant way of spending a sunny day with liquid refreshment and mates. Miserable if you're out there on your own in the wind and cold though!

I am surprised to see you say that to be honest :) I dunno why .. /me shrug
A nice baby cos heart salad with a nice dressing is hard to beat with a BBQ in my opinion. Or Asparagus lightly boiled with a drizzle of lemon butter or with a soft poached egg on top... mmmmh

Mebbe it's a south american thing. I've had an Argentine tell me vegetables are an unnecessary addition to a meal.
Personally I agree with you, some salad sets the whole thing off.

I have a Polish friend who describes vegetables as "what food eats" :)

Asparagus slathered in garlic butter and grilled over the charcoal works too.
Typically my goto "greens" is coleslaw with added cheese and full fat mayo.

Whack out the new Smoke Fire from Weber, looks impressive. No info on when it’ll be available in NZ though.

It's freaking awesome according to a couple of the youtubers I follow who were at the launch event.
Weber NZ say it won't get here prior to first half of 2020 at the earliest.

Can offer you guys some really good vegan recopies for a BBQ if you keen.
This post saddens me in this day and age, every living creature has the right to live 😪
But if it wasn't for the demand of us meat eaters, would the creature even have lived to begin with?
We are creating life

You can't run a Pellet Grill without electricity. It's what powers the pellet burner pot.
You could possibly hook up a battery or generator but I believe that's likely pretty impractical for the occasional time you'd need it.
