Typo, obviously, thanks to autocorrect (I'm sure I spelt it correctly). Godwin's Law.

@Stu This is a genuine question as I'm honestly very confused by your mention of Godwin's Law in this thread. Are you pre-empting the possible use of the very common term "Grammar [insert name of certain fascist political party]", and comparing it's use to actual comparisons to said fascist political party?

I hate the term "on accident" instead of "by accident". I also hate "addicting" instead of "addictive". Oh, and the previously mentioned "y'all" drives me up the wall.

@Paul1977, it already went there. The post has been edited. The term has never been acceptable within these forums (except in one particular thread in the Politics sub-forum), and is against the FUG.

People often mistake me for an adult because of my age.

Thanks @Stu. I personally think it's a stretch to equate that with Godwin's Law, as I doubt anyone who uses the term is genuinely making that comparison. I've been called it before and never for a second thought that that sort of comparison was being made. But the moderators set the rules, so I'm glad I clarified and didn't throw it around in this thread (I very possibly would have referred to myself as one).

I'd like to nominate the police.

When describing this:

"The man then ran out of the dairy, brandishing a knife, and got into a waiting vehicle which went north down Bloggs Road. The car was last seen turning left into Primrose Avenue."

they will say

"The man has run out of the dairy where he's brandished a knife. He's then got into a waiting vehicle which has travelled north down Bloggs Road. The vehicle has last been seen turning left into Primrose Avenue."

It sounds so wrong when they say it like that.

As I understand it, Godwin’s Law doesn’t say you can’t use the term, but instead the law states that as the thread grows the likelihood of the use of the term increases. I believe Godwin himself is opposed to a blanket ban of the term.

I agree — I think it's a stretch, but the FUG is the FUG. It all depends on context and intent. I tend to refer to myself as a Grammar N*** and don't see anything wrong with it.
It's the difference between calling someone a nut and calling them a golf nut. One is intended to be a slur, and one isn't.

A broad-strokes ban on particular words, even if used in combination, would even mean we couldn't talk about Seinfeld's episode about the very severe soup vendor 😅
