Jas777:

If you do move to Singapore and did get a car, do all your shopping and buy petrol in Malaysia.

If you want a bit more of an adventure and potential to have a big salary and lower cost of living then go to Bangkok or Jakarta or Manila or a smaller city like Phnom Penh, Saigon.

Phnom Pen definitely qualifies as "a bit more of an adventure" in comparison to Singapore that is for sure!!

If you are a fan of bribery, corruption, kickbacks and that kind of thing it would be perfect. If you like rules and orderly society, not so much. The Happy Pizza is good though..

you'd think you've got them beat haven't you, but customs require you go exit Singapore with a full tank of fuel if your car has a Singaporean number plate.

someone will peak into your car to check

Well, actually for Singaporean registered vehicles you do have to have "only" at least 3/4 tank when existing Singapore to head into Malaysia/JB via either the Woodlands Checkpoint or Tuas - not quite full tank but close enough I guess.  Bottomline is you can't leave Singapore on a pretty empty tank to simply fill up in JB, unless you plan on making a longer trip into Malaysia to empty your tanks LOL.  In any case as you approach the land crossings to head into Malaysia on the Singapore side you will see heaps of warning signs on the roads/expressways to want Singapore registered vehicles of this requirement so you do have opportunities to fill up if your vehicle is less than 3/4 tank full.  On a separate note I remember there were reports that the Caltex station in downtown JB, jsut beside the JB Train Station, was apparently the busiest petrol station in Southeast Asia at one point - not sure if this is still the case (I'm more referring to it pre-Covid days). Oh and with Covid driving into JB/Malaysia is pretty much impossible now anyway.

Batman:

none that i'm aware. you may shop till you drop in JB

the other thing that sports car/motorcycle owners in Singapore do in Malaysia is drive as fast as they dare on the 4 lane motorway in Malaysia, and if you make it to Sepang on a track day you are burning rubber on an actual Formula 1 circuit. in the forums the Singaporeans boast driving over 200kph on the PLUS motorway, I do someone believe them as I have a few Malaysian friends who boast driving over 220kph ... who knows ... though you probably don't want to get caught.

In terms from grocery shopping in Malaysia/JB, well from what I recall there is so such rule imposed on the Singapore side, but apparently the Malaysian authorities have put a limit as to the amout of "key grocery items" that one could bring out to Singapore, as apparently these items were (heavily) subsidied by the Malaysian Govt for their local comsumption.  Key grocery items would include, but not limited to, items such as cooking oil, sugar, and I believe even rice etc.

Edit: Fixed typos and grammer

TeaLeaf:

I have never been, it is on my bucket list along with some Japanese cities I have not visited.

I also notice Singapore tax appears relatively low and IT salaries higher than NZ.... Not sure what the health and education system is like though.

Greetings

I have put off for sometime to respond to your post, as I was interested to read what others experiences have been like regarding Singapore πŸ‡ΈπŸ‡¬ etc.

@Tealeaf - there have been some great comments and some interesting ones to your post (to say the least); but if you are really interested in wanting to understand the culture, the shopping, the eating, basically the full experience then please feel free to PM happy to give you the full “actual” download of Singapore πŸ‡ΈπŸ‡¬

I have been to Singapore for the last 14 years (prior to Covid)… my God-Father is Singaporean, I even went through the process to apply for work-visa etc to migrate there… I don’t have a map of Singapore on my wall for nothing!

So if you are “truly” wanting to know then please do reach out…

Regards
