Here are the sets I've got, tend to prefer the Technic series over the 'normal' Lego. All though, having said that, I did recently purchase the Lego Ideas Pirates of Barracuda Bay (#21322). That was a fun build.

Lego Racers Ferrari 599 GTB (#8145)

Lego Technic Mercedes-Benz Unimog U400 (#8110)

Lego Techni Mobile Crane Mk II (#42009)

I also have some sets still from my childhood, not built, need to buy some parts

8846 - Tow Truck

8055 - Universal set

8851 - Excavator

Just recently, I also got the Lego Defender (not yet built)

Just purchased the large Discovery shuttle this morning. The construction book is like a Unix Manuel. It is going to take me a very long time to build.

How many pages is it ?

For the Barracuda bay, that was 460 pages. With that build i found it useful to have the PDF of the instructions open on a device. Placing brown on brown was a bit easy to read\zoom in on, rather than looking at the manual itself.

I'd play with my, sorry, the kids' Lego more often but I haven't got the patience to sort it all into colours first. Rather than go bonkers I'd need to build some kind of Lego sorting machine, out of Lego of course.

Help me understand where Lego has changed over the years

When I was a kid you had standard Lego bricks. They came in multiple colours and a few standard sizes and you used your imagination to make stuff with them. You could make almost anything you wanted, when finished tear it down and make something else. The possibilities were endless.

These days it seems you buy a kit and in that kit you are given everything you need to make one item? What do you do then, display it? Where's the replay ability in that? Where does imagination come into it?

My kids do both. The architectual stuff we keep and display, the lego elves/friends etc stuff gets torn down, rebuilt and reimagined.

Lego should take a leaf out of Jimus book for the large and complex builds. When you build a Jimu robot the app has the instructions and you can move the model in all 3 dimensions at every step. It makes it much easier.
