Just remember support on all mattresses in the same range are the same, it's the amount and type of topper on top that gives you the soft, medium firm, plush settings.
You can also buy topper pads to give an old matress a new lease of life.
mattwnz: We got a latex mattress online which allowed us to trial it. To buy a similar latex matteress that was branded and from a retail store that was going to be about 4 times the price we paid.

What is latex like for heat? I read in places that it's meant to be cool, but I've had people in bed stores tell me that it can get hot.

It would depend on what's wrong with it. If the springs are worn out, and the bed is no longer has structural integrity, a topper won't help. If your existing topper is worn down, then it might help. You'd want to be fairly careful you aren't 'hiding' a bigger problem.
https://www.bedsrus.co.nz/products/prime5-king This is probably the best replacement for my current bed, but dang if it ain't expensive! Shopping around doesn't yield much in the way of much cheaper than this either ๐

I paid less than $3k for an amazing Superking at Waitemata Beds & Back Care - you should be able to do cheaper than this pretty easily and still get a decent brand-name mattress.

The bed market is a complete rip and quite deceptive and anti-competitive here. Almost 80% of brands of beds in NZ are made by one factory.
Worse still, the identical bed, is sold by 6-7 major outlets but sold with SLIGHTLY different specs and finishes, and called different things, to prevent people from shopping around and comparing easily. It also stops the need for bed shops to price match. With sales offering up to 70% off regularly, it makes it really hard to determine the 'true' cost of a bed so it's almost impossible to get a baseline.
I think I mentioned it earlier in the thread, but the recommendation is to spend 30 minutes on a bed to determine it's true comfort level. Most people don't feel comfortable occupying a bed for 30 minutes, esp if the store is busy, at most they may spend a couple of minutes on it.
I think I also mentioned that the comfort of a bed in store is likely to differ fairly significantly for the fact there are no sheets on mattresses in store. The act of adding a sheet completely changes the surface 'tension' of a bed and makes it much less 'soft'. The recommendation is pick a level of softness one level softer than you think you'd generally like.
Eva888: My Sleepyhead dips on Mr E's side now which it didn’t when we first got it 6 months ago. It was flat and fine then so either he’s being overfed or the springs are softening.
Consider a warranty claim or a chat with the retailer to see if they can work with the supplier to come up with a solution for you.

I agree with you here - and the thing about beds is (usually) you can only buy them locally; it's not like a book or a DVD (for example) where they can be imported for a relatively low cost: a bed is a big, heavy bulky thing, which can also be extremely difficult to purchase sight unseen...not exactly like you can lay down on an eBay image to see how it feels or anything like that. Frustrating really.

This. It's going to be a manufacturing fault. Be polite but firm, insist they sort it.

Sure, but I'll take living here with those downsides over living there with the upsides :)
@Eva888 All mattress warranties have an "acceptable" amount of contouring that they deem as normal. It varies between manufacturers. But after only 6 months I'd certainly be talking to the retailers. It's also not necessarily the springs, I think more likely the comfort layer flattening out.

Well. We're getting near the end of our Winkl "mattress in a box" trial, and it looks like we probably won't be keeping it. Comfort wise I don't really have any complaints, and it's great for virtually no partner disturbance. But it's too hot. Over winter it's been OK, but is sometimes too hot (like sleeping on an electric blanket) - so over Summer I think it would be terrible for me.
Have done everything I can think of to help with temperature, different sheets, different mattress protector, increase airflow under mattress by removing fabric from bed base.
So that pretty much sends us back to the drawing board. Tried out a few in the weekend, and found this one quite comfortable (thought it would be too soft, but even though it was soft it felt very supportive). It's from the Sleepyhead Chiropractic HDX range, but since every retailer has "exclusive" models it's hard to find definitive info on specific models. As is always the case, it's 50% off the ridiculous list price.
But I just don't know...
I don't think you'll be buying a Winkl ever again - they've gone into liquidation (as per Newsroom).
Probably didn't help that they had things like this happening to them: https://www.stuff.co.nz/nz-news/350243196/rashes-and-lesions-your-mattress-making-you-sick
Hope you didn't change that mattress protector too much ๐
