My biggest pet hate like this is people who scour charity shops for things and then sell them at a profit on TM.
I am a fairly staunch capitalist but I draw a line at that. Stuff in those shops is, to my mind, for people who cannot afford to get things elsewhere. It's not for the middle classes to play Bargain Hunt.
I never thought that was the case. In fact the opposite. I believe their main goal is simply to get stuff sold so they have cash to distribute. There's plenty of charity shops in well-to-do neighborhoods and not so many in deprived areas which to me backs this up. The pricing is set low because the cost of donated product is nil. They are better to turn it over fast and make money than have it sit in the store and cost them money. If the TM dealer is not more skilled at price setting then he's doing the shop a favour by clearing stock.
If that is their job, they are not great at it. I know a relative of a friend makes a fair bit of pocket money hoovering up (in particular) Playstation and X Box games for $5 etc from the charity shops and flogging them for considerably more on TM.
If the games are worth that, then the Charity Shops have a duty to get it - and should put them on TM themselves.
You're (obviously) entitled to the contrarian view but mine is that those shops are there to provide for people who cannot afford things otherwise.

Wouldn't it be a huge admin headache for charity shops to transact through TM? Taking photos, writing up a descriptions, answering auction questions, checking bank accounts for payments etc etc. That would do my head in.. Considering most charity shops are typically run by volunteers (could be wrong - happy to be corrected), surely it's far simpler business model to just put a price on an item and take payment by cash/eftpos in the store..
Bung: There's a woman in Milton that single handedly is killing as many old sewing machines and push mowers as she can making "tractors" out of them and selling @$800. I can remember when they were traded in on a new machine and sent to Pacific Islands to live on as working machines.
A friend of mine and her Mum go out of their way to source sewing machines that are sitting around unused and pass them onto new immigrant families here, because often the Mum of the family will have been using one in their country of origin and can mange to earn an income here by sewing for others.
It's just occurred to me that this seller has also bought another cctv camera.
Bought for $66, now selling for $125! A 720p camera ain't worth $66 LOL.
Take note of the scratches on the dome in the first listing, then the second re-listed one.
I thought if people were buying and selling for a profit on TM they were supposed to be an intrade seller?

That thing means nothing, someone can set that to in trade and still screw you around and trademe dont care.

There is a guy "in Trade" who sells New Apple gear at prices 20% higher than new from Apple, then charges shipping on top
It would be very interested to know what sort of volumes he sells. There are some very naive people out there, and I wouldn't be surprised if this is actually quite a lucrative business.
There are people out there that believe that everything on Trade Me is a bargain and cheaper. I had a friend whom I used to advise regarding computer hardware, printers etc and she would go straight to TM and purchase. When I found out, I informed her that it was better and cheaper to go to Noel Leemings etc as it was actually cheaper and you will have a warranty with the goods. Some people have no ears, good luck to them.

They can but feedback does also play a role, as people that have problems will give negative feedback. I have usually had very good experiences with buying on TM.

I had listed them the previous weekend with a reserve of $100 and hadn’t got a single bite, though a good number of watchers. The joke’s on whoever ends up with them as their nighttime vision is poor thanks to the problems with fogging from the IRs (which I specifically mentioned in the listing).
Yea, It sold.
Feedback was placed 22-April-2022 by the buyer in Christchurch. TradeMe (and BidBud) is acting weird and not showing the price it sold for..?
So it's been shipped from New Plymouth Palmerston North, to Waitakere and to Christchurch? What an environmental disaster of a waste in shipping reasources.

According to: https://help.trademe.co.nz/hc/en-us/community/posts/7176431642255-Use-of-my-Photos , it seems like using other people's photos is a breach of Trademe's terms @jonathan18.
Future note if anyone else has their listenings photos used on another listing!
Buying something for $X and selling it for $X+ε is as old as civilisation itself.
That bag of carrots you bought for $3 at the supermarket... the farmer will be lucky if he received $1.
