Once upon a long time ago there was a takeaway joint in Manurewa that put the cheese directly on the hot plate while the pattie and onion were cooking, so you got a melty cheesey blob sometimes with crispy edges to go in the burger. Soo goood.

In case anyone is interested, Parade Burger in Ponsonby Auckland was fantastic yesterday. Smash Burgers are all the rage but in my opinion are largely overhyped. This place does a very good selection of burgers. They are pricey but all under $20.

My wife was out with some business associates last evening and went to Dirty Burgers, she raved about how good they were when she got home. I was at home and had a salad which for me is way better so I winπŸ˜€

While on the subject of good burgers that aren't made by Wahlberg's:

We were in Queenstown over Xmas and there was a guy on the waterfront (near K-Jet) making smashburgers (and only accepting cash and in his own words, Gold, if you've got it).

They were really, really good. Wasn't a lot to them, but they weren't expensive and I really filled up on one after a jetboat ride.

Was awesome.

So, it was okay, but not exactly the second coming of Christ or anything? It doesn't sound like it stood out like some of the other chains. I hear differing things about Fergburger too, while I think of it, but have never tried that one either.

Fergburger was decent but nothing spectacular imho.

Burger Liquor in Wellington beats Fergburger - however i've noticed on some nights Burger Liquor has a different chef, who seems to suck - you can tell the buns and food just aren't put together as well. Fergburger just isn't worthy of the wait, however the Ferg Bakery next door is pretty good :)

if anyone gets stuck in Rotorua and looking for a really good homemade burger try JP's on Jervis, husband and  wife run it and he seems to open when he feels like it so it can be closed on Saturday if he has something better to do. so check on social media if he is open. In a small suburban shop about 200 metres from my house .

I don't think any fast food burger beats a home made burger. Not for a second. I've watched numerous you tube videos on home made burgers and they honestly let you dissect each part of the burger. The bun... realistically I'm happy with store bought rather than making my own. Please toast your buns!

The meat patty... realistically I'm too lazy to buy a meat grinder and make my own mince. So it's either home made or a cheeky slit of a sausage to remove the skin then shape it into a patty. Some flavours are over powering 😬

The cheese... it's come to my attention we do not have american cheese, a cheese that melts at a lower temp. The same that is on McDonalds and appears in my you tube videos. It's available at costco but I don't think I could get through it in bulk. I've used mozzarella before. Edam my usual cheese... is such a burger disappointment 😬  I'm currently looking for 2nd best. Monterrey Jack gets a mention in you tube vids.

The sauce: definitely pickles, mayo, tomato sauce etc πŸ˜‹ doesn't take long to make while the patty is cooking!

The in between bits aren't that difficult.

But despite these limitations I am still in awe of home made burgers. Just the way you like it πŸ˜‹  So if you've pre-made the patty, you're going to win every time. It doesn't taste the same as a Big Mac or Burger Fuel but it tastes great every time.

Overseas: US I'm more of a shake shake fan than in-n-out. I've never tried Wahlberger but it just doesn't sound appealing as a must try... not even once! Australia: Ume burger or Betty's burger classic with egg πŸ˜‹  Hood burger has been good to me also. I haven't tried five guys which if rumours are true is good. I tried some other five something... meh. The others I've tried just aren't memorable so I don't remember. This includes fergberg in Queenstown. Nothing to write home about and I have more nice things to say about their bakery!

My favourite you tube burger makers are Sam the cooking guy and Joshua Weissman πŸ˜‹

Just typing about it makes my mouth water πŸ˜‹

Let me know once you've tried the Hybrid Burger from BurgerFuel.

I agree Shake Shack vs In and Out (most over rated burger I can recall other than Emmys Double Stack in NYC which was the worst burger I've had in 5 years).

Al n Petes in Parnell used to do this. Delicious burgers they were.

Interesting, I haven't put a pineapple on a burger in a long time. Not a fan of the chia seeds. Beetroot and the egg are definitely up my burger alley. I'm a bit of a purist and don't tend to order bacon with my burgers either. I suspect it will be a mixed review but I'll give it a whirl.

I had completely forgotten Al n Pete’s had ever existed. Yep - that was a great takeaway place. Used to go there a lot back in the day.

Another review that isn't exactly glowing. I think I might end up giving it a miss, despite all the hype.

And a place in Sandringham did the same (I think it was called Smileys?).  For those who have not enjoyed this, they basically make a cheese pattie that is crisp on the outside and melted on the inside and then put that on top of your burger pattie.

It is goodness wrapped in happiness.  I simply cannot believe other takeaways don't do it.

That is the only way I make burgers at home - the cheese needs to melt and wrap itself around the beef patty πŸ‘Œ

My wife and I went to Burger Burger in Christchurch the other day - really very good indeed.

Burgers are the ultimate food. Bread, meat and cheese.
