Updated software for older Canon equipment can be downloaded from Canon's website.

Canon's site is not the most intuitive however - it may appear as if W7 isn't supported in more recent releases when in fact it is. Just keep clicking.

Example:

Quick Menu only supports W11 right?

When you click the the Quick Menu link the next screen shows all OS supported even Vista.

I have an Optiplex 745 and 755 I picked up moons ago off Grays Online for the kids.  The 745 first came on the market around 2006 ish and I would have got it at auction for around $100 about 14 years ago.

Over the years I have used TM and PB Tech to:

  • increase the RAM
  • replace the dual core CPU's with Core2Quad chips
  • install (low end) low profile graphics cards
  • replace the HDD's with SSD's

The machines now have Win 10 on them, and are both dual boot with Ubuntu and/or Mint.  Still reasonably perky given their age and specs.

Am still using a QNAP TS-239 Pro, which I purchased around 2009 ish.  Have replaced the HDD's over that time, and currently have WD Red's.  Looking at a replacing it soon as it's probably a bit long in the tooth.  Still gets periodic security updates, but no firmware feature updates since 2017 ish

They don't have them for older scanner models though such as the LIDE 60 which I have in it's box. Their website says it is no longer supported in win 10 or 11.

OK I think you're asking a bit much in this case.....the LIDE 60 was first released in 2005.

Do you really expect support for an 18 year old scanner? Why not pick up a second hand brother printer with ADF?

Having said that - try this:

Any Older Canon LiDE Scanner (LiDE 60 etc.) on Windows 10 x64 2021

See my comment about Epson scanners, my something-300 is from 2003 and still supported. It's a scanner, they haven't changed in 20 years so you don't need a new one every year, and in terms of driver support the vendor provides some USB glue to tell WIA where to look and that's it. It's really mostly Canon that only support one version of Windows and never update their drivers, which is why you can get their scanners so cheaply on Trademe, they become useless every few years when a new version of Windows comes out.

The cheapest way to get a scanner today is probably to get an all-in-one printer/scanner/whatever and ignore everything but the scanner functionality.

I have already replaced it because I couldn't get it to  work under win 10 back in 2015, so it was about 10 years old at that point. But even older HP laser printers for example often still have drivers in newer windows versions and guessing some of those are 20+ years old.

I've just shown in the above screenshot that that isn't the case at all.  The Canon printers I've dealt with in the last 3 years are generally at least 10 years old and all but two were running on W10.

The one machine not supported after W7 was a 15 year old flatbed scanner installed on a 2005 HP machine running XP with the original PaperPort installed.  I just shook my head.

Idk why people bother with USB flatbed scanners, they're clunky, archaic and USB scanning/printing is not the way to go anyway.

I do agree 100% that a multi function printer with ADF would be much better value. :)

I bought a LiDE scanner just a couple of years ago.  PB Tech site said it was Windows 10 compatible, but it wasn't.  No end of drama trying to get it set up and in the end I returned it.  They were good scanners back in the day but I think they've given up on supporting them.  Even the more recent ones.

Are you sure? It's 2023 - we've got a lot of choices of death right now. Plague, famine, natural disaster, war - look, the only thing I can't get hold of on short notice is a rain of frogs.

Surely there's one you'd prefer to mere "cake"?

Not nearly as old as some of the antiques listed here, but I still use my Sony Reader (circa 2011) almost every day. I'm sure the more modern kindles and kobos are fine, but I love my chunky physical buttons and the form factor, and haven't found anything that seems to similar. The software's long gone (no wifi anyways), but Calibre still works.
