networkn: Heh, Kiwis are against cencus information being collected. Facial recognition ROFL there would be rioting.

I am personally for it, but we would need a lot worse than some jewelry stores being robbed and get it passed.

Aren't / weren't supermarkets doing facial recognition already?

Smart crims would wear a mask, given it's (largely) socially acceptable now.

Kookoo: This is where you need facial recognition. They didn't approach the mall with balaclavas on, right?

I think you'll find there are cameras all over the place inside and outside. They may or may not have approached with balaclavas on. Most groups will have a driver who drops them at the door and in they go.

Automatic facial recognition is trivial to defeat and isn't going to buy much time anyway.

It's technology not magic. The number of false positives alone is going to be horrible.

Pretty much. If you surveil people through society then you are effectively introducing the chinese social credit system.

If we start doing face recognition and other curbs on public privacy and freedom the idiots win. There are changes that retailers can do to secure their businesses without inconvenienceing their customers. I buy watches etc either online or the Jeweler I visit is access by prior arrangement.

Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.

What about bringing in revolving doors again. The ones that have four spaces and go really slow. Haven’t seen these in many years. It would be quite difficult to run in, grab and run out again. Might be a deterrent.

Auckland museum has continuously revolving doors, probably for a climate control purpose. You can't push them faster that's true.

Similar could work at MHJ, armoured glass of course and response protocols to avoid trapping intruders and creating a situation.

These are near impossible for disabled folk to use. Not desirable at all.

PLaying devil's advocate for a moment - couldn't we then have a nice wide "standard" door next to it that must be opened by staff, with a call button placed at the right height and distance for a wheelchair user or someone who is otherwise mobility-impaired to be able to get in and out?

Seems a lot of infrastructure, but if we are looking at closing off access, the building work is being done anyway

They could have two hardened normal doors that are locked and unlocked by staff. When both are locked they can form a holding cubicle to keep bad actors until police arrive. The open look the MHJ uses while inviting customers to enter they need to adjust to the times.

Jewellers could keep fake display pieces in the display cases and hold the real stock in a vault.

How much difference in cost making fake MHJ pieces? Their business probably relies on impulse buying. Making it more difficult to enter might cost more than it saves.

Unless the raiders are masked all the way in there must be camera footage and if they were masked how long did it take for anybody to call the police?

Last time I looked at the price of apples in the supermarket I thought that's got to be a target.

Sounds like you're describing what National Bank and ANZ had at most of their branches in the late 2000s & 2010s. Although that was more to keep bad actors out of the main branch area, I don't think they had the ability to trap people in between (which would've probably been illegal).

Although there's been little about them, appears at least 2 teens have since been jailed around these making headlines this week.

One appears to be in the right place.
