Second wave of explosions in Lebanon, this time in handheld radios acquired at about the same time as the pagers.  Wow, they're really not doing this by halves.

ICOM handhelds by the looks.

They’ll revert to plan c, pencil and paper.
And looking very closely at the pencils!

Hezbollah will have to revert to couriers to deliver information & orders, which is much slower.
However, I suspect that the IDF has enough "pattern of life" surveillance over southern Lebanon that they might be able to pick up a significant increase in motorcycle and/or pedestrian traffic and use it to identify chains of command and command posts and the associated high value targets

IDF and associates will already know most locations,

The trips to the hospital will have been the biggest uncovering of locations in recent time, and along with the no doubt undercover staff in the hospitals, will have provided a huge list of follow up  and sites to monitor...

Drone teams are gonna be super busy for months.

As mentioned, ingenious (unless you ever read the story about the big horse) and also ruthless. Booby trapping devices not knowing who will be using it or who will be in the vicinity when it explodes. I see at least one child was killed in the explosions.

Apparently booby trapping devices is frowned on by international convention but Israel never follows the rules anyway.

One detail mentioned online about the pagers is that the shipment was delayed somewhere for 3 months. Ample time to tamper with the contents and add the evil payload. 2-3 grams of explosives, one expert theorised the battery capacity could have been reduced to make space for the payload.

Looks like Israel will have to wait a little longer for peace. The civil war has only been going on since 1948....

Possibly the most pragmatic people on earth, I expect the Israelis have given up on peace in the near to medium term. As they see it they have neighbours who are popularly in favour of wiping them off the map and not interested in a peaceful alternative.

People don't generally want to wipe out other people for no reason. The problem is the Israelis want to keep on doing what has angered their neighbours (and at least 20% of their population).

One for the politics thread.

Make a political last word then consign to a politics thread. Talk about trying to have your cake and eat it 🤣

This is why, in my OP, I said I wasn't wanting to start a political discussion. I was/am interested in the tech and practical side of all this. However, it was inevitable that it would head this way.

I wonder if there are any more rigged devices, literally nothing is safe.

Personally, I wonder what comes next. You don't use up a one-shot capability like this that takes months if not years to setup just because it's Tuesday and you're bored. A major operation must be imminent.

I just saw a news report (https://edition.cnn.com/world/live-news/lebanon-pagers-explode-hezbollah-israel-09-18-24-intl-hnk/index.html) suggesting the Israelis suspected the plan had been discovered so set them off before word spread - use it or lose it decision.

Unless their intelligence suggested that there might be imminent risk of detection, and thus better to activate now to capitalise on the prior investment?

Edit - beaten to it by Jono, who was able to back it with more than just surmising.
