MikeB4:

Anchor and Mainland are foundation brands for Fonterra and an iconic brand of Aotearoa.

They are foundational consumer brands. They are not foundational brands for Fonterra because Fonterra is not a consumer business. Fonterra is fundamentally a company that grows milk and makes milk powder. Consumer brands are a very small part of their business and not profitable in the way that their other businesses are.

They've tried value added products for a long time and it hasn't worked so they have decided to concentrate on their core business.

The Anchor brand has been with Fonterra since their formation in 2001. The Mainland brand has been with Fonterra since its formation in 2001. Fonterra is a consumer products business.

Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.

It is sad to see the iconic kiwi brands like: Anchor, Mainland and Kapiti be sold off but hey Fonterra is a co-op and the farmers voted for it, they wouldn't have it if made sense to hold on to them.

Other new brands will emerge.

Consumer products are a smaller part of Fonterra’s business. The bulk products business is many times larger.

Watch prices rise. They are going to want that 3.9 Billion paid off within 10 years, and STILL make a profit on top.

Like the banks... a quick cash bump for the old owners has led long term into the new owners making far more money from us and taking it overseas to our detriment.

I dont buy milk powder, next drought, get their customers to help, not the tax payers.

I’m not sure what the objectors to the sale are trying to say. That the owners of the brands business keep hold of it to benefit the rest of us?

Not all farmers are Fonterra shareholders. Not even all dairy farmers are. Most of the rural communities living around the dairy farmers are not Fonterra shareholders.

Farmers live with risk and stress, work hard doing dirty work that city folk could not stand doing and the primary sector stops NZ from going broke.

The Anchor brand dates from 1886 and Mainland from 1954. Fonterra inherited them - it did not originate them.

Just because they inherited the brands doesn’t mean they have to stick with them if the return doesn’t stack up.

Regardless of what people feel here, as a group the Fonterra board are not idiots. If they think they should be out of consumer products and are backed by the co-op shareholders - then who is to argue with that?

So it turns out Fonterra is not a consumer products business.

So long as I can still buy milk in that special plastic bottle that keeps the light out, I'll be happy.
