I'm fine... I was on Twitter and Facebook, and readying for CDEM call out... sadly our CCC website is inaccessible!! Argh!

So had to spread news and updates unofficially via my Twitter and Facebook, to my friends and followers...

We're safe, pretty lucky to still have power and house is fine. Water supply is shut off now.

We didn't have our Civil Defence Preparedness kit ready, teaches us to get ready for future!!!

The following malls are closed until further notice: Riccarton (heavily damaged), Northlands, The Palms, Merivalle, South City. Unknown about Eastgate and Barringtons.

The Hub Hornby is half open, most retailers closed except cafes and Pak n Save, expect it to close early today though. Heavy structural damage at work. Vodafone is UP, XT is UP, XT was down for a while though in Hornby (power issue).

It's going to cost billions to the economy. Just lucky it occurred at night, and wasn't the really big one, otherwise there would have been fatalities. Amazing noone died, although there are a few people in serious condition.

It's going to be very interesting with the rebuild. I am a hater of old buildings, I accept that a lot of people like them. On one hand, you have damaged old things that probably should be pushed over and new stuff built. On the other hand, you have people wanting to save the old buildings which will probably cost more than just building a new one in its place.

They are demolishing some buildings as we speak.

Central town is CLOSED. And many of the pics I got this morning have now been cleaned up.

I've just added some more to my flickr, of a house near here that is no longer livable due to the ground sink.

Old buildings can be strengthened to earthquake standards, but it doesn't look like those tht fell down had been. The old buildings that are the problem are the brick ones. I am sure a lot of newer brick veneer buildings are also dadmaged, with cracks in teh grouting that will need fixing. They shouldn't be using bricks in NZ due to them being useess in an earthquake. I would avoid buying any brick building in NZ.

You need old buildings to give a town character and to keep the history. Otherwise you end up with very bland town, that noone likes. Old timber uildings will hold up as well as the newer ones built to earthquake standards. Noone really expeceted christchurch to be hit by a large earthquake, so their earthquake standards maynot be as tough as say Wellington.

This is going to be good for the commerical construction sector, which was in major trouble. The construction work from the Gisbourne earthquake in 07 has pretty much dried up now. Perhaps a good time to buy some construction shares.
