Linuxluver:

South African sensibilities on race issues are deeply shaped by the experience of

Apartheid - directly and indirectly. They tend - in my experience - to be very
much outside the NZ mainstream.....

Paul Henry not part of the mainstream? From my experience here in NZ he is very much part

of the mainstream. His comments were our of line because it happened on
national TV. But, his comments are no different to the comments I hear everyday
from fellow kiwis going on about race etc etc…

To be honest people do make mistakes from time to time..

But you do have to admit, the guy is pretty good at putting the idiots of this nation on the spit.

Did anyone hear him today, when he was interviewing the Eco House guy, when he said 'Canadians are funny people'?

Your post is an example of the sort of distortion I'm talking about.

I was talking about South African attitudes to race being shaped by a different hisotry and outlook....one not shared by people who grew up in New Zealand.

There are ignorant, intolerant people everywhere. That doesn't make them right. It also doens't give Paul Henry a free pass to be wrong, insulting and arrogantly so on the morning's only TV news program.

But I accept that trying to explain that to a South African is usually akin to trying to explain sound to a deaf person. They just can't see it from where they come from. The level of sensitivity required is a setting far too finely calibrated for them to detect, coming from the harsh, coarse-grained racial hot house that is South Africa.

That will probably seem insulting.....but I don't intend it to be. It's more a clear, simple summary of 30 years of talking to South Africans about such matters and coming to terms with the simple reality they have a view shaped by a history people here do not share.....and an uncompromising attitude that is also very much a product of the same environment. They MUST be right and everyone else isn't.

Just heard on the radio that people are now protesting outside TVNZ HQ. Im not sure what for, but would imagine they want Paul Henry sacked. People take things abit seriously sometimes. Just lighten up.

I guess today is a Perfect day to rock down to TVNZ HQ in our Paul Henry T Shirts from Mr Vintage?

OK, let me try summarize this.

You bending over backwards trying to make a point at how bad Paul is yet you sounding just like him. You just seem to have a racist attitude to South Africans LOL. Would you have said the same stuff to me if I had a little colour??? hmmmm probably not ey?

You don't know me.

Tell me again that his comments were not inline with the NZ mainstream... Your comments towards me have just proved my point..

It is serious. There are times when "lightening up" is giving bullies a clear field to play on.

Not this time.

Henry should have "lightened up".....but he didn't and the consequences are his and he has earned them.

The was the left with John Minto's rent-a-rable.  I saw them on my way home . They were yelling and carrying on while the cameras were filming but sat down as soon as they stopped.  After seeing this  lot and the GGs comments on 3News tonite  I'm on Henrys side.  The GG couldn't see what all the fuss was about.  Typical NZ  blow all things out of proportion..

Good lord, I still can't see how people equate this particular comment with being "un-PC" and "saying what lots of us think but are too afraid to say".

That might cover some of his carry on, but is clearly not applicable to an overtly racist comment. Anyone who cannot discern the difference needs to think a little more on the matter, those who can discern the difference and are still backing him over this present issue also need to think a little more on the matter (or perhaps they are racist and are backing him because to them this is an example of him saying what they were afraid to?).

In a nutshell that might be how you feel about the stuff PH usually does, but it simply doesn't apply here.

This isn't a freedom of speech issue, freedom of speech doesn't extend infinitely people, and certainly it doesn't cover racism.

Quite enjoyed Campbell live if you watched that also. Had John Campbell, Willie Jackson + John Tamihere all talking about it.

It's pretty simple, if you have NZ citizenship and you love New Zealand, you're a Kiwi simple as that. There is no stereotypical 'Kiwi', no one looks more kiwi than anyone else.

Anything else is semantics or splitting hairs.
