Useful tips for someone who is looking for a job (like me! :p ) and who doesn't know entirely the New Zealand market. Sometimes I feel than it's harder for someone from overseas to be taken seriously sometimes but I'm guess that it's not like that and it's all about selling yourself! (as someone well said before) with a little bit of luck...

+1 for the article xpd!

I agree and disagree.

You can be more "lucky" by getting the basics right.

There's luck as in the job becoming available, you being available and you being made aware of the job.

After that it's a case of matching you against their criteria for the position. That gets hard as you never really know in advance exactly what they are looking for. A bit like looking for a flat/flatmate etc. Anyone who comes to the door could technically take the room but it's preferable that they gel with the vibe of the place too and are compatible on levels above just being able to pay for the room.

If you don't get the job, you never really know why. It might be they had 10 people who were perfect matches and they flipped a coin because there was only one position on offer. It could be because John down the hall is tricky and doesn't like people over 5'7 or something. Don't read too much into it, just know that if you're not getting rejection letters, you probably aren't playing the game enough.

Hopefully you match what they are after on all levels. Work experience in a similar situation goes a very long way.

I recommend to everyone, take LUCK out of the equation because that's not how successful job seekers think.

Obtaining a job IS NOT about being lucky.

You are not crossing the road without looking both ways.
You ARE NOT playing Lotto.
Or BETTING on horses.

I really should blog about my recent experience in hiring.  Some of the stuff candidates were getting wrong was basic, common-sense (maybe uncommon sense is a better term).

I'd join you on the thread "What happened in the world of hiring today".

I have seen some CVs and wondered if anyone, except the job candidate, has read the CV.

How to help without a tsunami of CVs to comment on.

lets say than your are very good for the position and you go to an interview with someone on a Recruitment Business who doesn't know ANYTHING about the position and only know that he/she needs to find one before a date or there will be no money to claim as a recruitment agency... I think that this situations happened to almost anyone unless once in what you need to discuss technical topics with someone who doesn't understand what are you talking about (and it's that person who make the final decision), maybe you'll ask yourself "why I'm not there while I have better qualifications/experience than the rest?"... Lucky it's not even the 10% of the all thing but I think that sometimes it helps...

Getting a job is one of the hardest things to do in this economy.
