Adappted: Current kit:

Rancilio Silvia V3, PID'd it myself using a kit from the US
Rancilio Rocky grinder (really want to upgrade it)
Behmor 1600 roaster which produces superb roasts as far as home roaster go

The kit does pretty well aside from the grinder annoying me. The machine is not quite beefy enough to do perfect milk but good enough for now. The PID made all the difference in the world to shot quality.

What I strive for? Coffee of the quality you can get at The Memphis Belle in Wellington. Have never had better.

Nice work installing the PID, I've read that they really lift the Silvia a lot. I've not ever looked at roasting my own beans - where do you source yours?

It could just be me but I found the Silvia horribly unusable without the PID. The temp swings are out of control on that thing! I tried as hard as I could to "temp surf" and find a sweet spot. In the end with the PID, knowing the temperature is bang on for each shot lifted my espresso to new levels. I never had to second guess so many other variables.

The beans I get from http://www.freshroast.co.nz the cost savings are huge to roast your own. I now get 2kg's of beans for like 28-32 bucks where before I was getting 500gms of roasted beans for the same price.

I saw this at the Taste of Sydney event a week or so back. For what it is, it's pretty cool! I thought they also had them in the Nespresso store in the city.

Breville 860 Fresca. Bought this because it has a built in grinder and was in my price range. On the whole I only have one coffee a day. I used to buy a coffee each day on the way to work and I certainly had a lot of bad coffees that way. With mine I'm usually satisfied.

Luckily when I bought the machine I got a bunch of free beans. They made horrible coffee but they put the wife off of any coffee from the Breville. Swapped to fresh beans and got a milk thermometer and the quality changed straight away.

Beans are from Underground.

What does the coffee taste like? Is it worth the effort?

To continue the thread, in terms of my coffee equipment:

cheap but very effective and long lasting Breville ESP6,

a mini-Macho grinder (worth double the price my coffee machine!),

currently favouring Hummingbird coffee, but partial to Allpress or Kokako.

My intake is around 3 double espressos a day.

What does the coffee taste like? Is it worth the effort?

Makes a VERY good PURE coffee. Very smooth & a VERY good hit. It's not too much hassle if you have a few drinkers, i.e. it's less hassle then half a dozen coffee's from an espresso machine, but not as easy as a plunger / filter machine.

If you are into tasting a variety of coffees, this is the way to do it. It is a different method to espresso, so can't be compared equally (just like slow cooking meat Vs BBQ are two different results). But, yes if you are really into coffee, it's a great extra piece of kit.

I had my Pastor over for a coffee awhile back, he mentioned it looked like something from back in his druggie days, he also had never been so wired over a cup of coffee before :)

I have to admit, with your forum handle and all, I've been waiting to see what you're rocking at your place... Coffeebaron!

Interesting to see what beans people are using, for the most part I think which beans matters less than what you get fresh. I'm going to try Weasel coffee next, but I'd highly recommend everyone to try Coffeelab - I have an AP so bags couriered to me on their roasting days (Monday&Thursday) - brilliant setup!

ok I gotta ditch my Rancilio Rocky, this thing is producing terrible quality grind. I've tried the "teflon" mod too. What I would be interested is a 2nd hand Mazzer or similar. Like a 900-1300$ grinder 2nd hand. Does anyone have a source? I see the odd grinder pop up on trademe but it's rare you can get a good 2nd hand on trademe by the time the bidding wars finish.

In order from least-used to couldnt-live-without:

Bodum plunger.

Breville Cafe Roma - retired now as I hated it. The quality was variable and since I'm the only coffee drinker in the house my beans would end up going stale before they were used up.

Nespresso Lattissima. Now THIS makes my heart sing! I was given it for Christmas after I'd raved about the Nespresso machine I'd had in the apartment I rented in Paris. This is the model: http://www.delonghi.co.nz/products/product_details.asp?Model=EN680M

I love being able to have several different coffees to choose from whenever I make one. The capsules stay fresh & quality of the drink is consistently good.

The only thing I don't like about it is that in NZ we are only able to buy from Nespresso themselves. In France there are a couple of companies making capsule coffee which is compatible with the machine. These are about 75% of the price. Even so, the cost is comparable to any decent quality coffee.

I'm lactose-intolerant so limit myself to no more than 2 cappuccino a day (one of which is a decaf I have late at night), plus 2-4 espresso.

Currently I am using a Aeropress coffee system

Makes a rather 'Clean' cup of coffee if you use the paper filters. I use a metal filter which brings out the oils
a bit more.
